When someone is learning to strop i find the paddle is better(less for them to worry about doing) As you get more experieced i think there is nothing better than a hanging strop.
You are assuming that the Paddle strop is short :)
I guess that is kinda correct, as most of us start calling them Bench strops once that get to somewhere over 12 inches.. Personally I use the much longer (24 inch) "Bench" strops for pastes, I have one with CrOx and one with CeOx that are my goto pasted strops..
The nice long flat surfaces are easy and accurate to use...
I also have a really nice 24x3 inch with an beautilful piece of Boot Tanned Leather that Mark/Speedster snagged up from the White Boot co. that is just an awesome bench strop, I really really like using it...
Unfortunatly the longer bench strops, are not practical for strops in the bathroom after a shower and before a shave :(
I had the lynn abrams modular, but sold it to my buddy who just got into the hobby. I used it for sprays, but the $50 linen/felt strop from SRD just works best for me...preference is the key in all this I guess?
I've only used hanging strops, but I now need a new one and was thinking to get a paddle strop. I lost my strop during my last trip. I went to Vegas, I don't know how I lost it, but I'm sure that explains it hahaha. Thanks for the advice guys...
I mainly use a hanger but a paddle is real nice to have too. Especially for pastes/spray. I think the modular paddle is the best of the bunch for the versatility. Once you get used to it you will be just as proficient in your stropping with one as the other. IME.
I use both hanging and paddle strops. I have the SRD Modular paddle, and it works great. I've treated one piece of the felt with the .5 diamond spray, which I use for refreshing an edge. Also take the paddle with me when traveling. I also have a hanging 3" latigo strop, w/ the webbing, that I use daily.
make one.a simple pine board will serve you well, some contact cement and the substrate of choice.
Or you can go tottaly bonkers like I tend to do,This one has leather on one side,CBN treated balsa on the other.Fits in my duffle.
