Gentlemen:
What are your thoughts on strops manufactured by Bison? I rarely see anything written about these strops. The brand offers various models, including Horween Shell Cordovan. The Bison are handsome strops, and look well made. Do you have any experience with them? Thanks.

Because of the painful condition of my hands, especially the right thumb, more and more I lean toward strops with a light draw. Horse, because of its generally light draw, does quite well for me in that respect. I have a Walkin' Horse 3" and a 2.5", as well as a gorgeous Neil Miller Shell Cordovan. I no longer have my SRD 3" horse, but will probably get another one soon. Perhaps also an SRD Kangaroo, which seems to have a light draw. Anyway, then the Bison caught my eye. Handsome strops, indeed.
Obie not to get of topic, have you tried stropping with your other hand? I have tried with my left and it works okay if I keep on trying I foresee my technique getting better. I am right handed by the way.
Ed, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately my left hand has its problems, too. That's why strops with light draw help out. Thus this handsome Bison strop that I have been eying for a while.Quote:

Well have you tried stropping with your feet? I once saw this feature about a gal with no arms who did everything with her feet and she was pretty nimble too. Maybe you could even shave that way too.Quote:

If you want a strop with almost zero draw have someone make one for you out of pigskin. It's really tough stuff and when done right a razor will slide down it like glass.
Well they sure are expensive enough. When you said Bison, I was thinking leather from a bison. That is something I could try!
BTW Obie, I have a 3" SRD Horse that I don't really use. If you want to work out a trade send me a PM, I like a little more draw.
No, I save my feet for dialing on my mobile phone. As for a pigskin strop, I would think more about pouring barbecue sauce over it rather than sliding a blade across it.Quote:

Thanks for that information on the draw, Jimmy. Lynn also points to the strop's light draw. That's why I am considering getting one. I wish it were a 2.5" strop rather than three. I am not all that fond of 3" strops, but I'll have to make an exception. I have three horse and two cowhide strops. The kangaroo will add another dimension to my quest for the light draw. As for the Bison, I'll keep it in mind.Quote:

In the mean time, try SRD's Kangaroo strop. I know you already mentioned it, but I had the chance to try Travis' and it's a very light draw and a great strop. That might help a lot.

Hey Obie,
I just received the SRD Roo strop Friday. Got the replacement Roo and web to redo my buffalo strop which has way too much draw for me. When I took the web package out of the box, my first thought was they forgot to put the Roo strop in the package. As I pulled the web from the plastic package, I realized the Roo replacement was behind the web. It's so thin I thought it was a piece of packing paper to separate the web pieces.
As jimmy and the others said, it's very, very light draw. I really like it and I think you'll find it very suitable for your needs.
I don't think one can nick these, they're so thin any mishap, I think, will result in a complete slice right through it. Not a strop for a beginner!

I am curious about the handle. A side on view of the handle would be helpful. And to Obie, is the handle style a factor in your issues?
No, the handle is not the issue. Arthritis is the culprit, especially in my right thumb. It makes my honing difficult, too, but I do it anyway, stopping for 30 seconds or so every 10 strokes. By the way, I don't particularly care for a handle on a strop. Give me a D Ring anytime, which also makes it easier on my left hand. Or no handle at all, as in the old barbershop strops. The Bison strops looks to have a substantial and heavy handle. That might be a drawback for me.Quote:
