Hi all,
My first time away with a strop is tomorrow. Now, I'm thinking that the chances of the hotel room having a hook for a hanging strop are quite remote! I've got some thoughts but just wondered if any more experienced users have any suggestions on the best way to plan to secure my strop for use. The strop does not have a D-ring, just an eyelet. I've read the other 'travelling with strops' threads but they are all about packing them, rather than using them.

take some nylon cord and tie it to either a towel rail or a door handle.
How many days away? How many razors in your rotation? How many razors can you fit in your travel case?
If these answers work out, you can pre-strop the razors at home and bring them with you ready to go, and not worry about the strop at all.
i use a boot lace. you can tie it to a towle rack, doorknob or even over the hinge pins on most doors. just make sure yor remember ot re-pack it before you check out of the hotel :)

My travel strop has a leather shoelace looking bit at the end. I tie it to a towel rack.
My original strop had a metal ring, I looped a braided para cord bracelet trough it then around the towel rack.
As mentioned above, dot forget to pack it up before you leave the hotel! Strop the night before and pack it up, waking up late and scurrying out the door is an easy way to forget.
I just toss one of my looms in my duffel:)

As for razors in my rotation Joegags, I'm afraid the answer is 1. I could take my shavette but I haven't used that since getting my proper straight. Alternatively, if anyone fancies adding to my rotation ... ;)

Not helpful to you right now, but there is a piece of leather glued to the lid of my razor travel box for stropping. Perhaps you could find something similar for next time. If you are gone only a few days, you may not need to strop, or use your jeans. :) Perhaps take a few razors if you have them shave ready?Quote:

Easy, suck it up and leave the strop and razor at home. They'll be waiting for you when you get back. Besides, travelling with a straight and accessories can be a PITA.

pick up a carabiner at REI and use the towel rack
i used a bootlace in the end. easy to tie and untie and soft so it wouldn't damage any fittings. it now lives in my toiletries drawer as i haven't worn those boots for about 20 years. the chances of me ever needing Astroturf boots again are really small but i can't quite bring myself to chuck them just in case. much to my wives disgust. at least i have a use for a bit of them now. thanks again for all your suggestions.
I carry a 10 foot long piece of para-cord...always. You would be surprised how handy this can be for LOTS of things, hanging a strop is one.
Then again, I am the type of guy that requires about 5 minutes to load my pockets every morning :D
I also carry a couple zip ties daily...these also work well for hanging strops and they take up almost no space in a suitcase.
I take a DX Shavette (Parker clone) and a pack of Derby 1/2 blades. If I lose it, or its stolen I'm out 10bucks US.
I don't trust the airlines (or myself not to forget) to get everything there.
I always take my T Miller practice strop that has leather loop/strap. BTW T Miller practice strop is better than most strops sold. Perfect for traveling. Hang it over bathroom door and you are good to go. Good quality boot lace is ok but to me the laces give too much so I prefer leather laces.
I run a hanger through the hook on the end of my strop and hang it on the towl rack.
A 12 inch piece of Para cord, in a loop and a door knob.
I have sharpened a lot of knives and I am pretty comfortable with stropping. I usually sit on the edge of the bed step on the ring and strop. Never had a problem doing it. But if you aren't familiar with it stropping down like that might make you angel the blade and ruin your edge.
