About to buy my first strop and while I am not buying a high buck version, I don't want to have to replace this one in a few months..
Some strops have a separate handle/ring for each of the canvas and leather strops, while others have both canvas and leather attached to one ring/handle.
Is it less advantageous to have them attached? Should I limit my search to just those that allow the use of one of the strops while the other hangs loosely?

I personally like separate handles, or no handles and separate components. I have had a strop where they were together and it was hard to pull one taut against the other. I ended up carefully cutting the end and putting D rings on both. Problem solved.
Gentlemen, I'll take my strops with two separate components, too. In addition to the practical reasons to have two components, I look at the romance of stropping, as well, because something is missing in the two-sided strop. The paddle strop is a different story, of course, but it's only right that the hanging strop have two components.

Separated for me too, even though I hold both when stropping, but can control each independently. Also, depending on where you get your strop, you can replace components if they're damaged, or you just want to change to a different material or leather. Just more flexibility when they're separate, IMO. :D

It is interesting that some strops I have need to be held together and some don't. The difference being if the hanging component starts swinging side to side while I'm stropping on one or the other. I also notice that sometimes the other component, when held together, seems to sort of reinforce/cushion the stropping surface I'm using. More to stropping than meets the eye.Quote:

My first strop had the linen fixed to the leather and the linen started to stretch and that made it increasingly difficult to use. I wound up unattaching it.
I have 3 hanging strops and can't get away from using a paddle. I can sit down anywhere and strop. Of course I do about 12 or 14 at a time and I do enough standing and walking the rest of my life :<0)
When i do use the hangers I like things separate. Simplifies things.

Separate is definitely better IMO. BigSpendur said it best. One of the components will stretch more than the other and then you will see the difference for yourself.

I agree with this to a degree..I like having the components seperate in the it feels like there is more control over each. However I do have one strop where they're attached and after 6yrs of use I don't notice any stretching or noticeable differance. If I had to wash or clean the linen component mind you that may change.Quote:

The fabric and leather are joined by leather 'U' peices, which allow an even tension to be applied to both sides of the strop with only the one (1) handle.

Since this thread has resurfaced, I thought I would update it...
Back when I wrote it I opted for an SRD 3" Latigo with poly web. No handles. Separate components as SRD offers. I used it for a few months then bought a pre-owned 2.5" Tony Miller Heirloom Horsehide with natural linen.. it had handles that I promptly removed leaving only the D-rings. I love the separate components and no handles.
I am now in the market for a new strop... I am leaning towards Scrupleworks oil tanned Horween Horsehide. Again, no handles but rather than bare barber ends, I am going to request Torolf add some end caps just to have something to hold onto. Still undecided if I want natural linen or cotton and to be frank, I may get both. But I may choose to have them all separate and detached from each other.
It was suggested, back when I did the first post, that I consider both a paddle and a hanging strop and indeed.. I ended up with both..and then some. I started with an inexpensive Stropman paddle which is now my travel strop and later added a Kanayama board strop.
Not sure where this adventure will end!
You know, I just don't care if they are modular or individual components. If they are separate I gather them both while stropping anyway. I own Torolf's oil tanned horse hide and had one of his oil tanned cow hides. I have been a believer in oil tanned. However, I cannot help but want to try one of his vegetable tanned hides. So much stuff out there and so little money to get it with. Oh well, one of these days I'll wear out my strops and have to purchase another one. Then there are the Neil Miller's, Kanoyama's, Roo strops, I need a bigger cave and a bigger budget to hold all this stuff.
