Shaving Tutorial V3.0 now with closeups

these were filmed at the DFW 2009 Summer get-together. Fritz was kind enough to help me by filming, and Spazola was there for color commentary. Hope this helps any newbies that are interested.

Techniques covered:
coup d/maitre
with the grain
across the grain
against the grain
diagonal passes

I'm fully clean shaven, started off with 3 days off stubble so it would be more obvious. feedback is always welcome!

nice one. this should be stickied somewhere for newbies, and is mandatory watching. some nice technique there that i hadnt seen done in that specific way before (i.e. cross pattern under the neck using that type of hold on the razor).

Great video as always Jockeys! Btw, is Kenrup from the DFW area or did he travel here?

The diagonal passes on the neck really helped me after seeing them in one of the earlier videos.

You do some passes the opposite of what I do. I'll have to try your variation.
I just don't know if I can do the soul patch ATG right out of the box. I've never tried, so perhaps.
How you talk while shaving without cutting yourself is amazing, I would be bleeding like a stuck pig.

haha, i did kinda nick myself a little on the chin from talking and shaving. i have a very light soul patch, so atg is all i need, if you have thicker hair there, wtg should be done first.

great vid your one of my new heros but I do want that brush man that thing could cover my face in one shot

After watching these, I think I've been laying by razor down too much. I'm going to have to try standing it up a little more.

His advice on the diagonal cut on the neck in his V2.0 has been the greatest improvement for my shaves so far :y

my tweezerman's knot is big on my face that thing he wields would smother me, I want a handle like that though!!! reaking of cinnamon soap mmmmm :p

Great video, helped me to see some different ways I can go after the wiskers on my neck, so far my biggest challenge to get smooth-close-and razor burn free. Thanks Jockey.

I can't believe I have been missing these videos! Probably the best shaving demos I have seen so far, the close ups make a million year difference. A lot of new guys should look at the angle jockeys is using in these videos too. It will help them a lot, a lot of guys think they're using the right angle and it's actually too shallow. This was my mistake when I first started, a steeper angle would cause burn. But then I learned how to hone better on my Nortons and now I can use the angle in the videos here and get a smooth shave without irritation or a low angle that doesn't cut hair well.

having had my first shave today, i can not wait until tomorrow so i can shave again (never in my wildest dreams did i think i would ever say that) and try some of these tips out... my biggest challenge today was visibility and left hand, but i definitly see what i was doing wrong after watching these videos!

My right hand (dominant one) isn't the problem; the left was. But not anymore, thanks to these video's.
The only thing that's left for me to do, is to gain as much control as i have with the right hand.........it takes time, but it'll come :tu

Hi guys,
i had my first part shave today,sides only, the thought of doing anything else at present being a newbie is a gamble i'm not taking.didn't realize or know about the two handed shaving approach,thought my other arm was being controlled by a poltergeist.
makes you appreciate the level of skill involved.
i will persist and master this & with the info & help on srp i know i'll succeed.

Great videos; thanks, jockeys. Totally new to all of this... got my first straight in the mail yesterday and plan on trying my hand at my first straight shave later today, came looking and found these vids in the wiki. I feel a lot better coming in now having seen this with the close-ups... especially the angle! Again, I haven't started yet but I KNOW I would have come in shallower than that, so this is already hugely helpful! Plus the diagonal passes for the neck - don't know when I'll actually try those, but I know my grain on my neck is all over the place, and is my main concern for the future. Great to have seen those too.

I know this response is coming rather late, but I saw the video recommended in a newer post. Just wanted to say thanks for the post. I've got a patch on my neck right under my chin that goes from left to right in a kind of diagonal direction that's impossible for me to hit just right. I'll give these techniques a try next time I lather up!
