I'm delving into making my own scales for a SR, and I an a little confused with wedges, I'm wondering if they serve any purpose other than as a backspacer. Coming from a knife enthusiast background I'm familiar with backspacers, but i don't know if wedges serve some other purpose.

Wedges can be made as just spacers, but in most cases the angle of the wedge is used to add bowing to the middle of the scales. This flex holds the scales off of the tang minimizing contact/wear on the razor and scales. Also holding the scales off of the razor permit good air flow to dry the razor.
The few times I have mocked up a wedge for a set of scales. I start with a wedge that is about half the thickness of the razor at the pivot. Then I slowly shape the narrow end of the wedge to achieve a good fit, I also adjust the the wedge thickness depending on how I want the razor to sit in the scales. If you take a look at a lot of vintage razors you can see what was done and more importantly what caused problems.
