My approach is much the same as Hirlau's. Unless the scales are trashed, I like to maintain the historical integrity of the razor. I use the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", as my guideline. When I see some of the "otherworldly" scales that are slapped on a fine old piece of steel more than a century old I think of this lady who believes she has improved on the original model. But, I would still prefer the "boring scales" she started out with.
