Need advice (Newbie on board)

Hello all,

I purchased a couple of Straights to start learning how to restore them. (Ok wanted 1 ended up with 3, definitely going to piss off the wife) This is a J.A. Henckels #172 I picked up. It has some minor pitting and discoloration. The pins are tight and it is centered. Since this is my first restore I was looking for some advice as far as what would you do? I am not concerned with a mirror finish, but I do want them to look clean and functional.

So if you were me. What would you do?

simply polish it up with some mothers polish. looks like thats all it would take

I'll run by the auto parts store and pick some up. Use it on the scales also?

You sure can, I use Blue Magic, Mass is also well respected.
Send it out get it honed up and learn to shave all over again.

And maybe try my hand at etching on the unmarked side of the tang...make up my own makers mark so people know who restored it....

PS - so they then know who NOT to buy from! LOL

Once again, Thank you for all the valuable information! I am guessing to do the job right, I should disassemble and re-pin once everything is cleaned up.

Read up on the de-pinning, but yes it will make it easier.
Bone can be quite brittle, there is no rushing it if you have to force it at all it is not ready.
This rule of thumb is a constant in the straight razor world.
Be it restoring, honing, shaving or whatever.

Hmmm well i´d try to hone them and see if they actually can be shave ready. It´s a good thing to start with so you know that they will actually serve their purpose otherwise it´s just a waste of time.
