Both of those blade are nice biggies. Good luck on pulling the chip out of that one. Just go easy on it and keep it smiling.

Yeah my plan was to try and keep the same profile.

Man! A lot of hullabaloo next door at the conversation. I figured I'd get crazy and talk about some razors. Anyhoo...
Okay so I worked the chip out and did a rough reshape. After just a light polish with the 3M Marine I did a test hone two see where I am.

I reduced with as evenly as possible down the whole length. I think I narrowed it a little bit more at the heel but, oh well, you can't unring the bell and you can't put the metal back on the blade. I think it looks fine and the bevel is nice and straight and even. It just gives it a little bit more taper than it had. I may need to thin the stabilizer out just a hair to get it honed all the way back. In spite of that big chip this one is in pretty good condition. There's no real deep pits or devil's spit. There are some pretty pronounced scratches on the spine right at the toe end. You have to do a rocking roll stroke with this one because of the shape which is probably where those scratches and the worn marks came from but it hones out nicely. After probably 10 to 15 minutes of honing after the reshape it would shave arm hair the whole length of the bevel. I was able to keep almost a full 8/8". It comes in right at about 31/32" plus. I'm pretty happy with that.

Remember next time to follow the curve of the spine. It still works. Just cut that stabiliser back now.

I should have taken pictures of that part. I used a sharpie and made a line that intersected the bottom of the chip. I didn't go all the way to the bottom because I figured honing would take out the rest. Then I ran that line the rest of the way down the blade at the same distance from the edge. That gave me a line to follow for removing the metal. Looking a little more at the old profile and comparing it to the new I think I am pretty close really. I think the width of the stabilizer might be making it look more tapered maybe.

Plus those last pics have a little shadow at the bottom of the bevel.
    I don't know...

If this is your first reshape of a blade, you have done well. It’s not that easy. It does look either fat in the belly or high in the heel. Reshaping the stabilizer and heel should help the appearance of the heel. I may have started there after marking out the reshape. If I start with that it it keeps me from grinding away on the heel trying to remove metal because it’s thicker. All in all it is in serviceable condition which is way better than where it started. Good job.
