I had a hard time finding horn in the Netherlands (hoorn in Dutch), for one thing because there's a city called Hoorn... Finally, I got one that looks nice, is large and straight and I'm eager to make some scales out of it.
I don't have a press or a car to use as a press, so I cannot flatten it. I do have a band saw though, so I can saw slices off. Is that a good approach or do you have better ideas for me?

I believe that this link will show you how horn 'can' be worked! With that said, this is the only way that I've ever heard of from taking the natural horn and making it suitable for making scales or other items!

While I've never transferred natural horn to flattened horn, you will need some kind of heat source and a way to flatten it! Any friends you can call upon????

Is it well seasoned (dry) If so I would Epoxy it to a Board and slab it against a fence thru the bandsaw.
Clamp the slabs in place untill ready to use.

No idea when it was cut. I bought it a few days ago from a home decoration webshop, so I don't suppose it has aged a year. I'll just give it a try and see what happens, there's enough material for quite a few sets of scales, I think :)
Ok! I’ll admit to being very ignorant about horn, however when I was in middle school I became interested in trying to make a Powder Horn as in black powder rifles.
The local custom kill and cut gave me some horns for free.
Those horns were Very Thin!
Since the Horn that you have is curved, and ‘IF’ that horn is as thin as what I’ve experienced, is it going to be flat enough to be scales if they are simply sawed to shape?? :shrug:

That Horn is not solid,most is hollow,you may get enough material for two sets of scales,Maybe.
I was afraid of just that, but it gets thicker towards the tip. At the open end, there's maybe 2 or 3 mm of thickness and it's nearly flat, so I'll see if that gives me enough to work with.
Another question popped up, I noticed it's made up of two layers. The inside seems to be translucent blonde horn, whereas the outside is a layer of non-translucent streaked horn. Do I separate these layers first or keep them together and risk making weird-looking scales?
My girlfriend was sick today and I took a day of to take care of her. When I'd put her in bed with a cup of tea, a painkiller and a basket, I decided I could kill some time in the basement.
It turned out easier than I had expected to make a set of scales. I'll have pics up soon, but here's a shot I took when I had sawn out two pieces that were reasonably flat.
