I have a slightly used and I mean slightly gong razor... The gold wash is still nice but the metal on the blade has turned darker with age... Can I use nail polish to protect the gold wash then acetone to wash it off once I'm done making it shiney?

Acetone will take the gold wash right off faster than you can say Mississippi.
If you're going to polish the blade you can either put electrical tape over the goldwash, or use a q-tip to carefully polish around it.
You can try some "soaps"-foams used on cleaning silverware and stainless steels. Works perfectly for me, and the gold wash is not affected. If it's not pitting, just some darkening of metal, they do wonders.
I used blue painters tape on one of my goldwashed cleanups. Came right off without taking the gold with it when I was finished.
Nail polish works great, better than anything else I have used. Afterwards when using nail polish remover do NOT get it on the scales otherwise it'll damage wood or plastic scales.
