You are most likely right on the weight issue....

Have you felt how heavy those Dovo scales are?! :eek:

The grain in that wood is running in so many directions that the only way to stabilize it would be to laminate it to something like sheet metal or MDF. nonono, I said "SIMILAR to this one" :D. Mine was made from 3 or 4 layers of white ash veneer... Since it has straight grain, and fairly deep pores, it warped easily. Though, using burled wood, will make the scale "sandwich" stable and straight, due to the varying grain...

I would have to concur with this. You might as well use cheap veneers because the qualities of nice wood will not be seen much.

Hmmm, can you say Dovo Packawood or Thiers Issard Red Stamina ? Look at either from the edge......plywood really.

My plan was to use relatively boring grain maple and walnut for the striped part and have the top veneer as a very nicely figured piece, so you would have the brown and beige stripess running down the handle, and the face of the wood would have a nice pattern to it.
I got the idea from a walnut and maple laminated neck i made for a bass guitar once, and i really like these woods in combination.

I can't see warping being much of an issue here, because the laminates would be so narrow, and the veneer should be well seasoned if bought from a good supplier. Definately use a waterproof adhesive and finsh. as delamination will occur once any moisture gets in. I really would't worry about wastage either, as the ammounts you are using are so small!!
