Has anyone worked with the ram's horn from this ebay seller?
Two 7 inch Polished RAM Sheep Horn Knife Scales Slabs 1 4 inch Thick 10792 | eBay
If so can you say if they are more uniform in color as you work down the rough surface? The pairs don't look to be matched up very well for color or surface texture.
Are there any other sources for blanks?
I have,was not pleased with the product,maybe just a bad batch.

I think that most of the rams horn scales I have seen done the rough texture is left on for the most parts. Are you actually wanting rams horn or are you actually looking for the smooth buffalo horn? I have used Mygann and have been very pleased with both the product and the transaction. I have also used Robsbits without issue.
I have watched this seller but never bought. Seems to be high in price and then nails you with the shipping too. Maybe worth it if you want a smiling monkey skull though. Not too many of those around :<0)
I have worked a little with buffalo horn and wanted to try something different. I like the horizontal color bands in the ram's horn, would they show through if the rough texture is sanded smooth? If not I would go with buffalo.
I thought the price was a bit high also but what the heck is a smiling monkey scull?Quote:

That looks great Bob.The main problem with the ramhorn as sold on ebay is that it comes from domestic farm animals and can be rather drab in color and figure..
Is not easy to source but Rocky mtn and desert bighorn (wild)has a far nicer look.
I agree with Pixelfixed - rams horn looks great polished. I have made quite a number of scale sets for people using rams horn - at their express request - and the colours and flecks in it are quite unlike that found in other horn products.
I suppose it all depends where you get it from though - the chap who used to provide the blanks I bought seasoned, cut and stacked it himself and colour-matched them. Cost a lot more, but the final result was well worth it.
MIne was mostly honey coloured with white specks and striations and a few flecks of other colours, including red. No large dark areas.
