I looked up one of my old posts and found that a guy called Merle Johnson bought the American Hone Co c1900 and brought employee Louise Hiatt with him from another of his companies to oversee the hone making. She had the advantage of being taught by the old workers, looking them up and asking questions as the need arose.
The most popular hone was the frictionite, a baked hone containing abrasive grit and silica. The recipe was belonged to the owners of Dubl Duck, allegedly.
Louise was found dead at her home on a christmas morning and although they knew all the ingredients, no one could make the hones - she took that secret to her grave. When she started she had only just finished school.
There were other hurdles. A Rhodesian company supplied the grit for the 00 Frictionite I believe. When the Rhodesian company went bust supplies dried up.
