... do they get along?
I recently acquired a razor that has lots of gold wash, including on the spine. The plan is to have it honed so that it can be used, but that got me thinking about whether using tape is hazardous to gold wash. Is the stuff too delicate for the razor to be honed using that technique?
And as long as we're talking about caring for gold wash:
- How does one dry the razor after use? Microfiber?
- Is oil or Tuf Glide safe to use?

In my experience with gold you keep everything as light and minimal as possible. Just wiping my Goldedge dry with a hand towel and regular handling has worn it down lighter. Keep it clean with a soft towel or tissue. You could try to protect it with something but just wiping it on and off is not good :<0) I had one razor that got wiped out with just windex and a towel. Now, I rubbed it vigorously but it had years of crud on it. Yours may be a little tougher because it is new but I would say if your going to use it regularly it is going to fade no matter what.

I tried that delicate surface frog tape last week and it worked fine for protecting the area. It does come off easy and barely left any residue at all. None of the old gold leaf paint came off with it. If anything it was coming off too easy, but it was hot and very humid that day. The hone burns through it faster than electrical tape, so you have to keep an eye on it. I think I changed it 4 times during a 1k bevel set.
I have used regular electrical tape on my Dovo with no problem. If some adhesive from the tape remains I reapply the tape to that area and peel it off. The extra adhesive comes right off. The gold wash has not been affected.
Ace taught me a neat trick when it comes to using tape at any time. Put the tape on your jeans and pull it off and repeat until you get the desired stickiness (or lack thereof). Works very good and I can leave it a bit stickier for some and less for others.
I would be very careful if you use this method. The tape will hold lint which may cause the lint to to stick well enough to the point where the tape might come off during honing damaging the gold wash. I would try bouschie's method first since he said he had no problem. It depends on the electrical tape you use also. A good brand should not leave any residue but if it does, use the same piece of tape to pull off any excess residue if possible. It's up to you. If you have a junk blade with gold wash on it, you might want to test it first. If you don't have a junk blade, you might try a small piece on just a very small place & see if any gold wash sticks to the tape.Quote:

Huh? What? It doesn't stick in some spots and not in others. I just used tape OVER the gold wash as I was sanding the blade. I took the tape and using this method was able to decrease the stickiness enough to put over the gold wash. Worked the blade and it came right off leaving the wash perfectly in tact but do what you wish . More than one way to skin a cat.Quote:

There is never any gold wash on the honing bevels so the whole tape thing is moot for me.
That's the problem, "It doesn't stick in some spots and not in others" so I wasn't talking about the sticking to the gold wash, I was talking about the tape coming off while honing. I was just giving my opinion, I wouldn't take that chance of the hone removing the tape & destroying the gold wash. You didn't even get what I was trying to say! The reason I say this is because I've heard that idea long ago & I tried it once, sticking the tape only once to my jeans & it didn't work out like it was supposed to but instead the tape came off. My goal on this forum is to learn & to get the most out of everything & to give the best possible advice I can & I was just referring to an experience I had with the tape after sticking it to my jeans & I'm not saying it doesn't work but I just wouldn't take the chance of using it on gold wash, something that is pretty much irreplaceable unless an expensive fix were used. I still think bouschie's idea would be the best possible fix, but that's just me.Quote:

Never had a problem using electrical tape on gold wash. I only have two in rotation with gold wash, HESS 44's and I always wipe them down with rubbing alcohol after each use and spray them with Rhapsody (Auto detailer) periodically (once a month) to put a shine back on them, makes them pop and virtually keeps all finger prints from showing up on the steel at all.
That's great guys but I just wouldn't stick the tape to something first to lose some of the adhesive properties. That's an old trick but it works on some things. I'd be afraid it might come off during honing & screw up the gold wash.
