Destroing a beautifull rasor

Did anyone of you have ever broke a rasor during the restoration . I have restore 20 and more razors and that nightmare never hapened to my , but today .....
I bought today from the flea market a beautifull Wilhelm Boos jr. Solingen Germany SIGI 92 razor . Blade size was 22 mm or 7/8 i think . I buy it with a 5x15 microcorund stone 800 grit , for 17 $.
The blade and the handle , were brand new but a few Dots of rust , and a few small chips . After grinding the small chips of the blade ,i decide to polish it ,as usualy . After 10 min of polishing with the Dremel and 1-6 microne paste i decide to insist more for ideal polish , and then the devil came . It was an american type point , and just in a part of the second i made a little mistake and the wool polishing weel grab the point :gaah::dropjaw::dropjaw:
The result a huge piece of the blade aproximate 0.7x0.7 sm was broken of the point . I almost began to cry and after 1 hour of aufull regret , i decide , and i cut and shortened the rasor aproximate 1 sm of his 7.5 sm lenght .
Now i have a chubby 6/8 version of the most amazing , big and unique rasor that i could ever have in my miserable life .
This razor was exactly the same as J.Henkels Friodur 7/8 . I almost get my first hearthattac in age of 33 .
It is very stresfull experience and is example , not to rush things in owr pasion . Dont hate me please for this aufull crime .I wil not buy and restore more blades for a long time , in sure .

I've broken a few during the restoration process. Most of them were just practice razors and nothing I couldn't do without. I did break a Frederick Reynolds razor once and that was very disheartening because I lost the razor and nearly my finger.

Yes, it hurts when that happens. The use of a Dremel tool to polish razors has been known to cause exactly that problem. Personally I avoid that by hand polishing but have broken a razor in other ways so you are never completely safe when restoring old razors. The bright side is that at least you were able to salvage a usable razor out of the catastrophe.

While a dremel has its uses, it is the number one destroyer of razors.

Dremel: tool of injury to anything or one...I had a metal shop teacher in High School who ran a Dremel grinding wheel across his finger while showing us how to be cautious with power tools....he later moved to teach wood shop where I watched him have his finger yanked into a bench grinder wheel while trying to de-bur a chipped wrench socket by putting it on his finger tip. If the two events hadn't been so bloody and pathetic, I probably would have laughed, but my father raised me to be kind to....(fill in the blank). Needless to say, I learned a lot from the teacher.

Dremel . Never , never use it on or around a straight razor. The two don't mix. (Yes, based on personal experience). Very luckily I, nor the razor, were injured. But it could have been ugly for both of us!

Indeed they aren't. I polished most of my collection with a dremel and broke 1 blade out of 17 now I'm working on turning it into a shorty.

I would rate your experience with Dremels & razors as; very skilled & experienced,,, with a little bit of luck.

yeah thats happened here before in the same way. broke a carbo-magnetic griffon and an old cel-rot king cutter. i've created a jig to avoid dremel damage because i find it very handy for restoration... that being said, i dont use it unless i have to.

The last razor polished, I put a piece of electrical tape on the end just encase and it worked out ok.

Without the help of a Dremel (another power tool was involved) I did completely destroy a beautiful 7/8 Kropp.

Oh man that is terrible! One of my first power tool restoration razors I set next to the buffer to apply more compound and it fell off landing on the edge of a plane. It was destroyed utterly and now the tang serves as a mock up piece for scales.

when using Dremel it is important to hold it absolute perpendicular the blade , and to watch out not to get too close to the end .
At the begining i started up by hand the restorations, but it is 2 working shifts of 8 hours job , and the hands was hurting me .I am a 198 sm guy and a 128 kilos ex pouer lifter , but this job whith hand buffing , could destroi your hands , not to mention that if your a seller and restore blades for money , if you did it for few days on a blade , you risk to die in extreme povroty from hunger .
Because of that i only restore my blades to a workable state , i never insist to make them absolute free of small dots and shiny , but this time i was greedy and became slappy so the result was aufull .I will never forget this piece of blade , flying next to me .
Some sugestions for absolute safe polishing device for rasors . I dont think that there is such thing but you never know .
Im going crazy - this was a 20 mm american style 90 degrees angle beauty , absolute the same qwality and steel as the Henkells Friodur .I have some Henkells 72 , 77 and the steel is magnificent - the edge and the shaving , are only competitive whith my old 5/8 Bismark - Silver steel or my Exello Solimgen . I am going to die out of shame and regrett.

Using dremels like that is not done by people restoring razors for profit. At least, if you're doing this for money, you can buy better tools.

I am not a seller , just a fan and colector . But what did you mean with better tools . Is there some kind of bufing that is safe to be cosidered as beter . Some ideas .....???

Hand buffing,,,,,I use my hands to polish, clean my razors,,,, if the task is beyond what I can achieve with my hands, then it is sent to a professional to restore. I have managed to polish all my razors by hand,,, except 1 that I damaged,,, with a Dremel, the very first razor I owned,,,, it had to be sent to a professional to fix.

Use the Dremel if you want to,,, only you can weigh the "risk vs reward" on your razors.

You can polish your Double Ducks or your duck shoes.

Their saving grace is to do a lot of tasks - but not necessarily do them well, when compared to dedicated tools.

When making horn scales, I quite like to use a dremel to remove the bulk of the material from the blank sheet - leaving the rough banana-ish shape which can be refined into something that looks nice. Having variable speed settings is a big help - trying to control it while in 'maximum-whirling-death-mode' is a nuisance and came close to ruining blades, before I upgraded.

I use a Dremel to polish blades very carefully. I watched Lynn's video, the dvd you buy, on how to correctly use a Dermel on a blade but I was very unsuccessful on a polishing wheel with two very nice Wade & Butcher blades when the wheel grabbed them & slammed them into the pedestal of the buffer. Now I rarely use the buffer for that & next time I think of using it, I'm going to duct tape padding or towels all around it. I was sick when I destroyed not one but two Wade & Butcher beautiful blades!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is a right way to use a Dremel & it has to do with the direction the tool is spinning when using it. I CAN see where it would be bad news to use one. Any kind of power tool can be disastrous if used the wrong w/o knowing it! Any power tool can be a disaster to a razor if used wrong & sometimes when we are going at it & everything is working out just fine we tend to forget the proper way of using one. It is very easy to do, especially when you're comfortable doing it. You can chip a blade very easily if the tool is spinning the wrong way. If you are going to use a Dremel, watch Lynn's video, the one you buy & he shows the correct & incorrect ways to use a Dremel power tool on a straight razor. Excuse my typing if it is screwed up. My Macbook Pro went dead on me the other day & I have this Dell I had to re-learn how to use all over again. If you ever get an Apple, it is the difference between dial up & high speed internet. Imiss my Apple while it is being repaired!!!!!!!!!

Two things that I find very important with a dremel. One is the ability to reverse the blade direction and the other is a foot pedal, and I use the term dremel generically. I use mine often, never for blade polishing. It is great for cleaning jimps, taking a pin out and a few other things. I most often hand sand and polish and on occasion use my buffer. I am still learning about the buffer and need to go slow, as we all should when learning new skills on new power tools.

I use mine for pin removal & other things but I also use it for polishing a blade with Maas polish & it works like a charm. Next time I polish one, I'll show a before & after pic & they come out shining like a mirror. You must use it spinning in the right direction which means you must orient the blade at different angles. I learned that from Lynn. All due respect to others who choose not to do so & each to his/her own. I have not destroyed a blade yet with either of my Dremel's but I have used extreme caution doing so & I've polished a lot of blades with them. That's just me though. I guess I've just been a lot luckier than with my buffer. I have also used my buffer more & have not destroyed any ever since the two incidents. I agree with RezDog about going slow with the buffer. I think I just got in a hurry in fact I know I did.

:idea:A trick I learned with a buffer is to turn in around 180*. That way you are working with the top of the wheel or buff or what ever. You can see what you are doing much better. Now for heavy grinding you might want to work with the wheel going counter clock wise but for the light work on razors & knives when polishing clock wise rotation just makes sense to me.

Well, for one thing, I'd use a stationary buffer with 2" felt wheels instead of a dremel with those tiny buffing wheels. Because the dremel approach is much more time consuming, and has a much higher risk of uneven polishing. I wouldn't call it 'safe' exactly, but it is a better and more efficient alternative.
