WTH did my sonic cleaner do to my blade?

That's fresh orange rust. The blade is almost back to the way it was after a short hand polishing with paste. I used plain water for just 10 min. Is this normal? The water was left very dirty and the dirt in the cracks was reduced but it still needs more time.

Water does that, the agitation works out the faint traces of oils and allows the water to get in there and oxidize. Not a fan of sonics for razors, to much agitation that can pop a thin blade.

Umm, no sonics back in the day. Is that the only razor you have used that sonic cleaner?

I only use my ultrasonic cleaner on scales, open the razor and dip it in holding onto the blade. I use warm water and dawn and it really cleans the inside of scales. I've never tried the whole razor

I never used a sonic cleaner on a razor but used it in the lab quite frequently, I'm realy suprised at the effect it had on your razor.

if the water accidified earlier while cleaning scales with cell rot or something like that, I would expect an overall stain, not this verry localized yellow rust in your picture

it's realy weird that you have rust but no stain, are you sure it is rust and not some other type of stickyness?

It was my fist time using the machine with clean, chlorinated, tap water. The scales are ivory with a lead wedge and brass pins. When I rubbed it with paste the cloth was colored as you would expect from rust. The color of the marks was an orange-red as if it had been copper electroplated. There had been some green verdigris around the pins that disappeared through the process. Maybe there is some odd chemical reaction going on.

My understanding of these things is that distilled water should be used....

Hello to All,

I use my sonic bath for my safety razors (nickel & chromium plated not gold) and for my cartridge cases when reloading.

For those tasks it works superbly : I have never used it on a straight razor blade - probably wont now after your experience !! :(
