Horn,Bone, Ivory etc

In section 799 I was a bit surprised to see horn being used by opticians. I guess this is the origin of the "horn rimmed glasses".

Very interesting read. We must remember that these materials were the plastic before plastic!

The horn was used on glasses for the nose pieces and arm coverings around the ear - or at least that is all of the horn parts I see on an antique pair that I have.

Some spectacle frames are 100 % horn - the guy I buy from (HighlandHorn) still has a superior grade in 4 different colours for that purpose. If you search Youtube you will also come across a Japanese craftsman using Tortoiseshell and steam for laminating into frames.

You people from the boonies and the suburbs need not spend so much time and effort chasing the wildlife. In the city those 200 pounders are a dime a dozen, just go to the subway and they're all over at all times.
Of course you have to wrestle them with bare hands because guns are verboten and only criminals and law enforcement have them, but that shouldn't be an issue for any self-respecting man.
