My first crack at a complete restoration.

I picked this W&B for $7.00 at a local antique shop last weekend, I have been collecting for a few months now and have about 20 blades that I have cleaned up but have not put any of them together until now. Let me know what you think ! I hand sanded and polished the blade, then I made up some micarta for the first time ever from an old fleece I had sitting around to make the scales, for the wedge I used a old bone that my dog wasn't really using lol.Attachment 197043Attachment 197044Attachment 197045Attachment 197046

Well I have to say that it is pretty nice for your first go. It is really hard to get the really fine scratches out. I have never made micarta but that looks like nice stuff. I have to say the only thing that might be a little off is the wedge looks quite long. Over all I have to say great job!

I found a very similar razor to that one, it also was listed as broken, was there any etching on the blade face at all?

I didn't see any etching, the blade was pretty rusty though and had a few chips on the edge. I have been looking for another one that looks like it but have not been able to find one.

my next purchase will be a set of honing stones and strop and learn how to sharpen these things.

Here's the one I found, was listed as "broken" when in fact the scales had fallen off the razor. Very similar blades which is why I mentioned the blade etching.

That is very similar ... I see yours has jimping and more detail on the blade than mine, nice work Phrank ! My scales were also broken. I go into two shops and they are going to set aside all the straight razors for me to pick through when they come in. I also got a talley ho but it had a nasty split in the blade and I could not save it.

Valery, a member here from Toronto who runs the Gentleman's Den did the work...I'd probably explode with frustration if I ever tried to hone a near wedge like that.....;)

You did that yourself though, and it looks fantastic, maybe I have to start learning pinning and scaling razors now, but that would mean me owning "tools", which means much blood and disaster, and my wife won't allow me to have them anyhow, she'll just say I'll end up hurting myself - again!

I have yet to get any of mine honed, I was thinking about sending mine to lynn abrams .. I'm here in michigan and could go down to Maggard razors in Adrian as well thats where all my family is but I personally would rather learn to do it myself. the only way you learn is to try !! lol

LOL ! its funny that you said that because when I was drilling the wedge and pin holes I have a 20v Dewalt cordless impact driver and I was not paying attention obviously and the 1/16 bit went through the pad of my middle finger and out the top of the nail !! it didnt feel good ! HAHAHAHAHA !

WOW! You did an awesome job! I am beginning to love to "restore" my own razors too. Very satisfying to see and use a finished product you did with your own 2 hands.

Thanks ! that is how it is for me as well, I love to learn new things and being able to save a razor from the trash is satisfying, like you said especially when you do it yourself. I have become addicted ! I can work on a razor for hours and not even realize how much time has passed.

Very nice. I will admit, I'm not adventurous enough to make my own micarta (it's expensive stuff). It looks good for your 1st go.

How does it shave?

For a first go, you done a cracking job. Nice functional razor and great find for a bargain price.

They look great and you did an amazing job! I've seen people pay money and get less than that! You took an old cheap blade destined for the scrap pile and restored it back into a usable shaver! Very well done sir.

HOw did you get the engraving on the tang so clean - I have been unable to do it on a couple of old W&B
