Questions About Making Stag & Ivory Wedges

Hey Guys,

I started making some wedges and had a couple of questions. I have some deer antler 'discs' and that have a lot of marrow to them. If they're dried out, is it okay? Will it be okay having the pin hole in the marrow? They were given to me and I was thinking they might be more solid, but I still want to use them if I can.

If you are making a wedge out of ivory, do you soak it in mineral oil or anything before putting the razor together? Use them as is?

Fill the voids in the antler with CA Glue,use the ivory as is.

I'm using CA Glue on wood, I don't know why I didn't think about using it on the antler.:gaah:

One guy told me that in the old times knives where they use whitetail antler, when you burned the tang into the pith, it kind of hardened it up. With that said, when I use sambar stag carvers for handles, I generally scrape out all of he pith with my handle broach and replace it with epoxy. What kind of effect are you trying get? Do you want the "bark" showing on the edges?

Interesting, I haven't heard that before. Makes since.
I tried finding a stag disc that would fit the scales I was working on, but I don't think any of them were large enough (the scales are pretty big).So, I guess I'll use them on a different project.

I guess I'm not set on whether I want the bark showing or not. I didn't think you could show the bark on all sides since the wedge has to be cut or ground out of the disc.

I wish I had a piece of white or black acrylic to work with. I'll probably have to make one out of wood for the time being.

(Checked the pieces again, and I may have one that will work)
