Antique Store Find

Just picked this razor up in some small town in the middle of Missouri. I only paid $5, and it was a super good deal. It is a Gillette Butterfly style safety razor, and that's about all I know. Can anyone shed some light on the situation? Also, I'd like to restore it to its old shiny glory, and I don't know how to do that..... Help? I would surely appreciate it! It's been a while, good to talk to you guys.

Also, it seems that all of the rust is surface. I cleaned a lot of with just a rag and water, and all that remains I just can't get to it.

I beleive that is a Gillette Superspeed, probably from the 1960s. There should be date codes on the underside that you can tell when it was made. You can soak therazor in soapy water to break up gunk on the inside. From there you can use scrubby bubbles or toothpaste to clean it. Just do a search here and you will find several threads about cleaning Gillettes.

I had that model at one time. It gave a fairly mild shave.

Mid '50's - mid '60's Gillette Superspeed, on the bottom will be a letter and a number such as D4, the letter will be the year and the number the quarter of the year it was made. An old toothbrush and some hot water and dish soap will get that looking pretty good. When clean use a fine metal polish such as Maas or Blue Magic etc to finish it up

A toothbrush and toothpaste is your friend. First soak it in vinegar for about ten minutes to dissolve the calcium/ soap build up. Rinse well after the simple polishing.
Go to the Safety razor threads to find good blade sources.
Have fun and go slow with the first couple shaves!

It's a Superspeed. Good deal for $5. I started wet shaving with one of these. It's a good razor. If you have access to an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner, that's an easy way to clean it. It can be re-plated, but if it were me, I'd just get some Feather DE blades and shave with it.

+1 on the Ultrasonic cleaner, they work great with just some warm water, dawn dish soap and a spray or two of windex

I second the toothbrush and toothpaste, that cleaned up an old slim adjustable I picked up last year pretty well. Great shaver too Btw.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will probably just clean it up tomorrow, as I kind of like the old patina on it. I have some feather blades here and will surley shave with it before church tomorrow!
