What it the best way to clean the jimping on the tang?
I have tried dremel wheels with steel wire, but that doesn't do much good, though I thought it would.
I think the wires hit the tang, get bent and fail to really slide between the jimping.
So if someone has an idea I'd be interested to try it out.
Maybe some kind of abrasive with a really stiff brush? I did that on mine and it got rid of most of the oxidation, but there wasn't that much to begin with.
I use a wire brush on the dremel, works just fine for me.
You may need to look at where the bristles are contacting the tang and move accordingly.
I use the polishing wheel, that made from compressed wool, forgot the name, with some metal polish...

Radial bristle discs work pretty well, too.
Ok then I'll have to try it again and figure out what I was doing wrong.

I am pretty sure Joe is referring to the 3M radial bristle discs. They make small ones for use with your dremel. They are highly reccomended by many on this forum. You can get them at Rio Grande www.riogrande.com if you are a member, or you can get them at www.najatools.com, but pricing is a bit better at Rio Grande. It is easy to become a member, just call them up.
Depends on the jimps... and how badly they are rusted and how good you want the result. If they need more than wire brushing and/or a little scraping I generally use a file which matches the geometry of the jimp... most commonly that's a triangular micro-file. I like the diamond coated ones as they last longer. :shrug:
I prefer something in the 1.5" size and the 2" is the closest thing to it, that I'm aware of, but you'd need a Foredom to mount those suckers. 6/8 seems a bit small to me, but if it gives an even finish, I'll order'em up from smallparts asap.
I agree with Joe and 1adaam12, those little bristle wheels are the way to go.
