My first set of custom scales

So I ordered a couple of razors from WhippedDog as I fancied learning to shave and i've always enjoyed creating and restoring items.

These are the razors I got in the post. The black one had cracked scales and the cream one was badly warped so I started off on the cream set first.

I had some american black walnut laying around so i decided to use that. I got the basic shape cut out and starts sanding it to the final shape I wanted.

I wanted a gloss finish but didn't fancy using my epoxy so i gave to CA glue method a go. After a few passes and it already started to look great.

And heres the finished product. I just need to start learning on how to restore the blades when i have some spare time.

Thanks, I need to work on the pinning but I think I'm just no going slow enough tbh.

Nice job. What did you use for the wedge?

I used the original one that came with the razor and just sanded it to shape.

Pins look good in the pics. Smaller washers would probably suit those scales a bit better though. In my experience there are a few thing that really help with pins.
When you cut the rod you don't want it to be too long or you can get splits when it mushrooms too wide. It takes some experimentation but you'll know when you get it right.

After you cut the rods to the correct length the ends need to be sanded or filed flat. This will help you get a nice round shape once peened.

Polish your ball peen hammer. The surface of your pin will look much smoother after shaping it with a polished surface.

Be sure to polish the pins when you're done. It makes a very big difference in the final product.

I've always liked the look of wood. (scales and otherwise).

Great job done.

Nice work, polishing the collars before assembly is a bit easier but they can be polished on the razor, there are recent threads on doing so in the Workshop Forum.

Blade will clean up with WD40 and 000 steelwool, and a good metal polish, but looks pretty good.

Those hammered tang Robesons are good shavers.
