When Enough is Enough...

I have taken my share of chances on ebay. You know... Buy a crappy looking razor, hoping that under the rust is an awesome blade.

I recently did this with a "Maharajah, Sheffield Engl". The thing was covered in dark gray "stuff", but it looked cool so I took my chances.

This afternoon, I felt like a resident in an emergency room: The patient is declared dead, but I keep trying to revive it anyway.

After about 20 mins with 80 grit, and all it was doing was a polish here and a polish there... but not much help on the bevel area... I knew I was in trouble.

After 45 mins with 80 grit, the typical bevel area up and down the edge looked like this:

Dont think this is going to be able to take an edge unless I make this 6/8th a 5/8th.

Towel? Thrown. I give up. I surrender. White flag city.

You could do a trial bevel and see what the steel looks like. Those pits look pretty deep but it's hard to tell. You could try a re-grind .

Yep...like Atchbo said, does it hone? If so, then go to making it pretty.

Yeah, suppose I could put it to the stones and see what happens.

I wouldnt think it would be worth it to regrind her. I dont have the tools, so would have to invest in having it done, and it aint cheap.

And for a razor I got for a song, I am not sure it is worth the investment!

I'll put her on the stones, though, and see what happens. Maybe start out with the DMT 220. :D

I think a 1k diamond might plate be safer, or start with say a 400 hone and move to 1k just before the sides meet at the edge.

In the end, do what feels right... This is an adventure!

I was more joking then not with the 220. That's pretty much my lapper, only.

I will start this one out on a Chosera 1K. Maybe with some slurry from the 400 cleaning stone.

I have been there a couple of times, and sometimes it's hard to cut it free! I usually try way harder then I should but it has worked out a couple of times! Of course, it has also been a complete waste of time a few times...

I tend to get more "waste of times" then I dont.

I really wish I could have made a DD Goldedge work out recently, as spent like 12 hours on that blade hand sanding... but alas... she just sits in my work box now as a reminder to not buy blades with big blobs of brown on them. :D
