Just some general guidelines that I follow...if the damage is as deep as the bevel, it has to be a pretty damn good razor for me to hone that kind of chip out. If 1.5 to 2x the depth of the bevel...forget it unless you are willing to send it out to be reground. If on the other hand, the damage is half the bevel deep or less...an hour or two on a coarse grit stone will remove the damage (make sure you tape the spine).
Here's hoping your ding is not too deep (but the fact that you said it looks like a saw does not inspire confidence).
