When this came to me it looked like someone had taken a grinder to both sides. I didn't have the patients to take out all the scrtaches, but I got it pretty close. I made the scales to the exact shape of the former celuloid ones. What do ya think?

I think it looks great... you did well to preserve the engraving.

I find I have a hard time getting the inside radius perfect too. :shrug:

Looks good, though it seems, at least from the photos, that it is unfinished purpleheart. If so, are you going to seal it, lest the scales crack? - J

More sanding where--blade or scales?
The scales have two coats of tung oil on them, the flash on my camera made them look very pale. I didn't sand them completely smooth because I thought it looked nice with the more rugged wood. There is a sheen to them in person though.
Now if I could only hone...
