Makes you hate Dremels

Beautiful old Holley near wedge 7/8 with original horn scales. Just almost cried when I saw what someone did to the blade faces with a Dremel. I should not blame the tool. Just the tool using it. :rant:It's going to be a challenge to straighten this one out. Almost put it in the butchered blade thread. The back face is really wavy with a few digs into the bevel. It was on eBay and timed out with only one bid under the reserve. Made an offer and got it cheap enough just hope I can straighten it out.

I'm pretty sure you've got this one.

if it was a good price i think you did pretty well,
ive personally done this / tried and as long as there not to deep ....its just alot of work,
ive tried using the rubber wheels with grit embedded and its certainly do able to buff / polish out....

Fortunately the blade is plenty heavy enough to correct the damage. :gl:

You're right there is a lot there to work with. Just fluster someone did that to such a nice razor. Makes it look shinier to sell so they thought. I wish they had just left it alone. I don't come across many nice Holleys'. I've sold a few but only have one in my collection. I'm hoping to keep this one. The scales have bug bites in the center of the scales but the edges are pretty clean. I'm going to try the horn dust and epoxy trick.

That is a nice looking razor despite what they did to it, it should clean up well:)

I bet that blade was nice before someone that shouldn't even be allowed to use a Dremel or work on straight razors, got ahold of it! Its really sad the things I see on eBay. A lot of it, the ones that claim to be restored rather they are highly polished with pits & all by a straight razor wannabe restorer! I hate seeing stuff like that because the risk is knowing whether or not they got it too hot. On this one it looks like it will be alright & a Dremel probably wouldn't have over heated it hopefully but I bet it will be okay. It's terrible to see when someone does something like that to a vintage piece.

Beautiful blade. I am partial to Holley's. Great steel that was made literally in their back yard! Oldest cutler in America too. I don't know what it is but every Holley I have bought, with original scales, ALL had bug bites.

I can't complain about it. I was young, ignorant, and... I butchered a blade. So today I pay the karma I own... without complaining.

That looks disgusting. I picked up one, blunt end, that had a small nick so I took a course stone and ground it down till all appeared level, never thinking about the smile on the blade, so it is a straight edge now. It seemed to take eons using a soft Arkansas stone to begin getting an edge. once I got it I went up the scale of my Arkansas stones till I reached the finish polish stone< it has taken me a few months to finally get the edge to shaving condition. I think it still needs work so I got some Lapping film at 8000 then 15000, hoping to get a good finished edge. I like the lapping film as I think it does a good job on putting a clean surface on the edge. I also have a 50,000 water stone I have used to touch up blades. I do this only when the blade starts pulling at my hair.

I have never used e-bay. I have not had bad success with antiques places and shows. There I can actually view the product. I had a slight out and out with one dealer. The blade had numerous nicks. the handle appeared to be ivory, but looked too white and he wanted $60. I offered $25. He said it was an antique. I informed him of all the time it would take me to restore it to use and it just did not seem to connect. It has been a year and I have been back periodically to look if new blades have come in and his blade is still there a year later and the price is the same. That dog ain't getting off the shelf. I would be interested in how you plan to remove the disfigurement without distorting the edge alignment?
P.S. Should you reply I might be awhile answering I am having some serious problems with my server. Every time I get an error and cant enter my e-mail I have to call and spend about 30 to 45 minutes to re-set my pass word then it happens again. Tried on google to get on and received the error message there. On this server I don't shut my e-mail off.

Well here it is. Just some quick pictures on the back porch. The best part was the test shave this morning. Just a super nice shaving experience. I lost a little of the blade width because of the dremel digs in the bevel. Ended up nice and even though and about 1mm wide and something less than a 7/8. Took some bread knifing to clean it up and then started the bevel on a 325DMT. Call it 13/16 plus I guess. I like the thick tang to hang on to. Scales came out nice. Amazing for 100+ years old. Honed up on a 1K Chosera, 3K, 5K, 8K, 12K Naniwa and finished on a Suehiro 20K.

Ouch. :dropjaw: Not much metal to work with on a hollow ground blade like that. I'm going to say it's scarred for life but looks like it will hone OK.

Figured it would be a good test subject to learn how to hone. Been reading and watching vids, but still trying to decide what hones to buy.

Lots of info in the honing forums. Chosera 1K is probably the best hone you can spend money on for setting a bevel. I lived a long time with the Norton 1K. The Norton 4K/8K combo stone won't break the bank and it was also one of my first hones. Naniwa 12K for a finisher is also money well spent but you don't need it to get a nice shaving razor. In fact if you are learning you should stop at the 8K until you can get a comfortable shave then see what the 12K will do. If you find the edge a little harsh try several strokes on chromium oxide on felt before stropping. Knowing what I now know I'd buy the Chosera 1K and Naniwa 5K, 8K, 12K as a starter set of hones. You can move to trying the natural stones once you have mastered the synthetics.

What makes me hate Dremel. I don't. Ilove them, but they are a tool that takes time tolearn to use like so many other tools. Dremel is similar to shaving, time and skill and knowledge.

Looks great...and frankly am glad to see the way it turned out.

I have a gorgeous 9/8 W&B Celebrated For Barbers Use, that had a dremel run over the blade face. Believe it or not, whoever did it pretty much left the etchings on the face alone, but made a mess of the rest. It's been with Val at The Gentleman's Den for a couple of weeks now getting fixed up, with some nice red horn scales, be nice to finally have that blade in the rotation, and seeing this one raises my hopes...thanks!

Thank you for the info. I know first hand what your end product looks like, I would feel comfortable spending the cash with that knowledge. Was looking at some hones today, but walked away......glad I did now.

PHrank. It just dawned on me that a dremel would be a nice tool for polishing a blade using pastes of superfine grit.
