Teaming on Restoration of two Old Sheffields
Picked up these two rusty Sheffield razors several months ago and thought I'd try to save them. Knocked the rust off them and was able to see that one was a W. Greaves & Sons, Sheffield and the other a H. & J.W. King, New York. The first three photos show these rust buckets as found. The blade photos show the significant pitting on both blades and was not sure they could be saved. I love these old Sheffield and didn't think I had the right equipment to do a proper job and possibly ruin them. I have done lots of restorations but none in this bad of shape. I sent the photos to my friend Karl Johnson (karlej this forum) and he agreed to give it a go. I sent him the blades and he did some amazing work saving both. He put a crocus finish on both and was able to protect the logos as well. He was able to get nice thin bevel and a beautiful shave ready edge. He then sent them back to me. I then dressed them in some nice honey horn with brown/white streaks matching the size and shape of the original dark horn. I used the original wedges, replica brass cup washers on the Greaves and replica nickel silver washers on the King. I am happy with the result and appreciate the fine work that Karl is able to produce. Two more Sheffields saved.
