Amputation is The Only Rescue!

This "Barber's Pet" was thrown in with two other razors I bought off a co-worker, a couple months back. He made his money back on the first two, so just gave me this one with a big crack near the heel (that he didn't see initially).

I figured it would be good practice for trying to salvage a cracked blade. I can't be butt-hurt if I break an already broken, and free, razor!

The amputation was rather nerve racking. I did it with a knock-off Dremel cutting disc, and a beat-up Skil brand electric hand drill. Free-hand. Lol.

I smoothed it with the same drill, free-hand, with a name brand Dremel bit used for sharpening.

Now, I would like some opinions on how I should proceed in shaping the shank? I am leaning towards a wonky Kamisori for the finished product. Probably going to give the new heel more of a slant. Can't put metal back, once it's removed!

Should I smooth the stabilizer, and put some over-sized jimps on the side? Might be a nice addition for grip. Or should I just reduce the width of the blade at the stabilizer even further, to an even and flowing handle?

Here is a concept grip/hold. Kind of. Not easy to hold like a kami with the scales still attached.

That must have been a little nerve racking to say the least. I have never cut out a heel. I feel like the risk of cracking is so much higher cutting a heel rather than a toe. It turned out as well as it could have, mission accomplished.

I chose to cut, rather than grind off the heel because I feel like grinding would have caused severe reverberations that would risk enlarging the crack further. Minimizing vibrations is also why had taped the spine for that stage (not gonna shave with a cracked blade!) lol. It also localized any high temps away from the edge metals.

Rez: any thoughts on my question of how to proceed with the reshaping?

I have shaped a few toes, but the heel leads to different angles and curves. I would use a small credit card size diamond hone for the flat areas and outside curves. The inside curve you will need a round diamond file or a drip can and a stone wheel on a dremel. Two things that I always use with my Dremel. A means to secure the blade, like a vice or more often I use my engravers block. The other thing is a foot pedal. It gives me a lot of control and allows two hands for the Dremel and a drip can. I made a barbers notch on a cut down Frederick Reynolds. I used the Dremel round stone and put it in the drill press, I then held the razor in one hand and the drip can in the other. It took a while, but there was no heat generated and the barbers notch worked great. It will be similar to shaping out that heel where the back of the heel comes against the horizontal of the tang. Go slow and it will be fine.

I did one like that, I used a pencil grinder in a dremmel.

Here is a concept drawing of what I have envisioned for the final shape of the shoulder/heel. I traced the blade itself, and then sketched possible alterations over the outline. Disclaimer: I am no good at drawing, painting, etc.

Top idea is a sort of dimple fingertip grip idea. Second is a flowing shoulerless shape.

It ain't easy..!!
Lots of work to me, I've thought about it several times, always the same outcome... Eah, blade isn't worth the work, for me. But if its way you want to do...go for it.!!

I like the idea of getting rid of the lines from the shoulder. I think that the dimple idea has great aesthetic value, however is is going to take a bit of effort to grind and shape that. I say go for it and raise that bar. I also prefer the heel shape that is drawn with it.

Thus far, I have only done one side. Might hollow out a bit more. But I think I may carve in some diamond shaped jimps on the dimple. I'm doing this for grip, so why not go the last 9/10's of that extra mile!?
