It's called a wedge...

Been awhile since I've had a chance to restore razors. It seems more razors are offered now without the traditional wedge in place. The old lead wedge on this razor was ground un-even and was not doing it's job... Some natural material acquired from Pixelfixed some years back was used for this application.

By using the tape method of holding the material to keep your fingers away from the sanding disc, shape and form the wedge thinner at the rear and thicker towards the pivot pin,

which is to act as a spacer fulcrum to form a slight bow in the scales.This creates tension to reduce warping the scales and helps when closing and nesting the blade. Especially with wedge grinds.

Continue shaping on sanding disc, finish by hand sanding. Easy does it.

Domed brass washers were chosen to help distribute the load on the more delicate natural scale material.

Ditto on this! It does seem that many cutom makers are now just doing spacers with parallel sides. Is it because a true wedge takes more fitting and hand work? I know that learning to fit and pin a proper wedge has been the biggest technical hurdle in rescaling for me by far!
