I have a Sheffield Bengall SR that had cracked horn scales. I decided to re-scale the blade with run of the mill acrylic/plastic scales. The pinning hardware has rosettes and tiny washers. My question is: do you need washers? Can you re-scale without washers? What is the advantage or disadvantage of using or not using washers?
FYI: This is my first replacement scale job on a vintage razor.

You can rescale without washers, that's how alot of ivory was from what I have read. I did some clear scales without washers. Is there any advantage? None that I could see really. I think if done well it looks nice :)
The advantage I can see with using the "inner" washers is that it would help distribute the load that the washer puts on the scales. Especially with the domed type of washer. You either have all the load on the outside edge or with the inner washers it would spread the load evenly across the whole washer.
Just my thoughts...
The washers are designed to keep from crushing the collar, and to keep the edges of the collars from digging into the scales.
You might have to lightly sand the bottoms of the collars, some have a sharp edge to them.
Nice razor, Whiz! I like the color of the scales, even if the material is run of the mill.
Do you mean no washers at all, just the bare pin peened right to the scales like is common with ivory? That's a nice look and requires some careful peening.
Or do you mean just the rosettes without the support washer underneath? I think you need those for support as stated above. You'll never see them and I figure it can't hurt to have them in there. You'll risk crushing rosettes otherwise
Good question Tuzi, I was taking it as no washers at all. Like ivory.
I thought the washers fit on the inside between the tang and the scales...and the rosette was on the outside...and you peen the pin over the rosette. Maybe I am overthinking this...

You want the smaller washers between the rosettes and the scales on the outside. The larger inner washers are optional. Blue line of course would be the blade.

No. They go under the rosette.

Place rosette on pin, then the little flat washer. Then pass pin through one scale. Then install a wear washer.
( large flat washer .005 thickness )

Then blade, wear washer, scale, Lil flat washer, rosette, cut n file pin down.
Peen away.!!

Now that we have the correct washers in mind, i agree. Use the tiny washers under the rosettes. Its important.
Not that my two cents means much now that pics are posted and all but i just had to throw it in. Nice looking blade for sure.
Whiz, maybe when you unpinned it, it was missing the inner washers, the large flat ones that go between blade and scale. That's because they often didn't have them. There's debate about whether of not to add them when doing a rescale, but many people like to add them. I think its a good idea to add them in most cases, feels like the blade moves smoothly and eliminated wear on the inner surface of the scales.
When I unpinned the scales there was one inner washer. Funny. I think since I only have one I will use it. In my usual impatient way...I want to get this pinned and honed!Quote:

For centering the blade
No, I don't think so. There was a fair bit of wobble...the scales were very lose and cracked at both ends...indeed the pins had no "head" on the reverse side from the picture. Someone was trying to remove the pins. There were pronounced striations to remove the heads of the pins. This is an old razor and the horn scales were very worn, hence my desire to re-scale.Quote:

Another thing to keep in mind is the wedge. Did you mark it fro t or back or someway to know which way it was? Wedges are not always perfect. They will fit one way perfectly but the other way they can be off a bit. So be sure to check that really close before pinning.
Oops. Your replacing scales. Nevermind.
And here is the final product! The non-pivot part of the scales was already pinned and I didn't want to take the chance of ruining the scales...so I have one rosette and one non-rosette. I will get this on the stones tomorrow and take it for a test shave. Thank you again for your advice everyone!

Once ya do enough, its like riding a bike. Then you'll want to try collarless pinning.
Took me about 140 pin jobs , before I felt comfortable doing it. So I went the whole Evel Knievel route, and did it on a two day set of ivory's.
Talk about nerve wracking.!!
