Could anyone recommend good blades for a small Stanley handplane I have? I can't get the original blade sharp enough to cut very well, and I'm thinking the steel might be too soft to hold the edge.

If you can't find the original blades anywhere... try Lie Neilsen
They make tools that are stanley replicas

heat the edge up till it is cherry red and a magnet wont stick to it then dip the edge in some old oil ,just the edge ,about 1/2' in . It will be hard then

They specialize in replacement blades.
I seem to remember Clifton makes laminated slightly thicker replacement plane blades.
