Cutting a Thuri

Here’s on I’ve been stressing about for awhile now. I need two 2.5 in slurry stones to complete two Escher sets - barber’s gem size. Because they are extra select quality, I didn’t want to degrade the slurry quality with lesser slurry stones.

I had great results making slurry with a 5 x 1 branded thuri in two-tone. So I decided to cut it in half, effectively giving me two $40 slurry stones.

I have no experience with this, but read everything I could find on the subject.

So, I made a jig for my coping saw. I pre-cut the wood to guide my saw. The saw blade is nothing special, and is the same one I use for wood and acrylic scales.

Then, it was quite easy. Took maybe 4 minutes of gentle sawing. The 1st picture below is before sawing.

Now, I have to learn to make boxes!

Nice job. It would be a little scary putting a saw blade to it. Looks like you did a fine job. Boxes are not too hard. Just take you time.

Wet saws that you use on ceramic tiles are awesome! You did a good job. How sharp is the saw now?

You did better than a guy that was getting big bucks for "Slurry Stones" and Thuringians a few years back. No guide at all and a wonky surface to work from... Good on you!
