I have caliper that was reading .004 when closed and I couldn't get it to zero. Then the light went off, the jaws were dirty, it was a forehead slapping moment "DUH". I think, we've all been there at one time or another:).

Im picky too and want things like this to read correctly. Althought .004 isnt much. The ZERO button was an option too. Been there done that Freddie! At least you figured it out and didnt live with it.
Yup. Been there done that. Years ago I stopped by the Auto Body Shop I used to work at and the Head Repairman 'Hugh' was working on a pickup that had been ass ended. The bed was off and he'd made the initial pulls to straighten the frame but it was still 1/2" off when he was measuring diagonally. He was measuring from a hole in the center of a cross brace.
He'd been trying to figure out what was wrong for hours. He asked what I thought and I took a quick look and told him that I could see that the hole wasn't centered. So we measured and sure enough it wasn't in the center so once he marked exact center his measurements were right on!
When you're working straight commission 4 wasted hours is a lot to come off of the supper table.
Now to check my calipers for cleanliness. :tu
Its a rule in our shop.
Test the test equipment, before doing the test.
After a while,it becomes second nature to wipe the anvil faces and check for zero.
At least you are not pressing the unlock button on your cars remote then reaching for the house door knob. That was my dumbass-ness
I need one of tjose. A FOB that unlocks the front door.
I try and “click” on stuff on my computer because I’m so used to doing it on my phone.
I too have taken to wiping the faces on the calipers, .004” reloading can be a lot for some of the operations.
Wait.......MisterClean wasn't keeping things clean? :dropjaw:
:roflmao just messing with ya Freddie
Been there and done by those little bits of forgetfulness/ Now the big screw up is to bump the trunk button by junk in my pocket...

Or the car alarm that won't let you walk away...Headlights bumped onto "on" not "auto" beam and car don't want a dead battery.
Not once but twice...duh~

How about calling maintenance over to find out why a feature on the machine your run every day isn't working and after they show up it turns out it just wasn't turned on?
I was stuck in a check stand instead of working my actual job of produce when I overheard the Assistant Manager telling someone that she'd call a repairman to look at the compactor. When the employee passed by I asked what the problem was and she said that when she hit the 'On' button nothing happened.
So I called the assistant (26 year old wannabe) over and asked that she let me out so I could check the compactor out and was told "No, it needs a professional to look at it." I persisted that she should at least let me look at it so she took over in the check stand. I was back in about 2 minutes and told her she didn't need to call for a repairman as the compactor was working fine.
You should have seen the look on her face when I told her that someone had accidently hit the Emergency Stop Button and all I had to do was pull it out so the machine could run.
That call would probably have cost between $150-$200 or more.
Give me common sense over education any day.
Well, my caliper does the same thing as the original poster's. Guess I know why now.
Not Caliper or Tool of any kind related--but I too got to feel Like a Dumb A$$ today.
I always 'TRY' to make sure my rent check is in the mail and arrives earlier than the rents due. So today I wrote the check out and had it ready to be picked up several hours before the postman usually arrives.
I checked time and time again and the letter was still ready to pick up.
I finally did an online check for holidays for 11/12/2018 and since Veteran's Day was ACTUALLY YESTERDAY the Government and others (like USPS) take today off!

I took machine shop 3 years in high school & worked in a shop for a couple years & had a lathe & shaper at my house & was always taught to clean of all tools I used including measuring tools. I always carry a small rag when I work in the shop.

If something like that makes you feel dumb, I should probably be ashamed of myself!
I spent 15 minutes trying to kick start my daughters scooter it was only after I gave up and started putting it back in the garage that I noticed the kill switch was on.
I know someone :rolleyes: who tried to touch his computer screen to close a file because he was so used to working on a phone or iPad. :aargh:
Kinda like driving a dump truck all day, then getting in your vehicle with Automatic transmission. I always tried shoving the clutch down, every time..
You knew you had been on the road too long when you picked up the home phone and dialed '0' for a wake-up call. Done that...
Richard i had this issue and the alarm too so i disconnect that part of the key fob. Now i can push that button til the cows come home and nothing happens. I open the trunk from insixe the car now.
Setting the alarm off at 3am in the garage was the worst part. The wife came running out to see what was going on. She wasnt too happy with me.
Somehow I feel like if all the SRP members were honest and each member posted at least once on this "I feel like a Dumb A$$" thread, it would become the longest thread in the history of SRP and would live on forever!
