Honestly, Victor, I gave up on the tapes after the first time I used them and went back to Rubber Cement been using it exclusively for over 10 years now and have never had an issue on any material
Thanks, good to know about the rubber cement, I'll try that too.
I've used various tapes.
One time I used that thin foam-like double tape and had to put the project to the side when I had other work to do.
Came back to it and it was a PITA to get off.
Various tapes will say 24hr to 72hr .. After that it doesn't come off clean.
I'll try the rubber cement.
Do you put a piece of paper in with it or just the cement?
Just the cement
I push the two side slightly at the pivot when done, and slide a Utility Razor blade between the two sides and they come right apart..
The cement comes right off
I
How long do you need to let this rubber cement set up before you can start work?
I posted a U tube video a while back about useing regular masking tape on each scale and using a light coat of super glue right down the middle of one to bond them. It has worked for me.
Video is about 15 minutes. Worth watching the full thing for ideas
Luthier's trick
Have fun

I did love that vid Richard. Sounded so easy. Still havent gave it a try. But the rubber cement sounds good too. Im still using the two sided scotch tape. It works fine for me. But ive not tried it on bone so i didnt know it didnt stick to that material very well. Thanks for pointing this out Vic.
Like Glen i used two sided tape once.
Went back to rubber cement
Geezers masking tape and blue worked the one time I tried it
Depending on temp of course
Apply a thin coat to both sides wait 10-15 minutes clamp together,,, I usually do that step first thing in the morning, do all the other work on the blade and that afternoon I am good to go on the scales
I have rushed it a time or two :) you just let the two sides set for 15-20 min then stick together and you can usually work right then
No, I am NOT talking about contact cement, Yes, I realize those are the same instructions, and it is not quite the way Ruber Cement is used for mounting pictures etc:
I'll have to try the rubber cement. I use the two sided scotch tape and often run into situations where it doesn't hold well.
My solution is to take a pice of duct tape and apply to the surfaces that aren't bonding. Once I do that, they always bond.
I’m still a philistine. I use two sided carpet tape and loosen it with WD-40. I work almost exclusively with horn and bone and it has not been an issue with the WD-40. The carpet tape does hold well enough that I would not take it apart without the WD-40.
:-)
I did use white glue and thin cardboard once, then a quick trip under warm running water an it all can apart and cleaned off quite easy.
Thanks guys. It looks like the masking tape/ super glue method is going to work best for me.
I with RezDog, double sided carpet tape and oil to remove it.
There are two problems with double sided carpet tape and WD40
1. Double sided carpet tape
2. WD-40
Another great place for a laugh out loud button.
Just wipe the bone clean with acetone, never had an issue with the thin 3m double sided tape to date on any material, split with a razor blade then clean it all with acetone again, always apply a thin coat of neatsfoot oil on all bone & horn on completion anyway brings everything back fine
No tape.
simply make the outline of 1 scale, drill the holes, then drill through the pin holes, through the 2nd blank.
Drill 1 hole, put a screw through both blanks to hold them together, then drill the 2nd hole.
that way the holes line up perfectly.
put the 2nd screw it, and simply grind the 2nd blank, using the first blank as a guide.
No tape or glue necessary.
Addendum:
If you use the CA and tape method, be sure that you do not use freezer tape but only masking tape. Don't ask!
