My first razor I made myself

Hi, last March I decided to make my own razor. I am not a producer, I am not a salesman, I just wanted to make a razor for myself and for my own experience. All I had was a handy basement workshop. During the implementation, I bought a grinder. I bought n690 steel, unfortunately I had to buy 1m length, which is why it came out 10 pieces. However, I did only one.

Yes it is my first one. I am not an objective creator of it, but shave great

looks like you did your homework in learning what a razor should be like to start with. Would love to see the extreme smiling blades. Thats got to be tough grinding.

It so happens that Mariusz is a friend of mine here in Warsaw and I had the pleasure to have this razor in my hands on Saturday. What can I say? A beatiful piece of work! The picures don't reflect the details like the perfect finish of the scales. Ironcally this razor was meant to be a fail for learning purposes. It was the last bit of the steel and the razor came out a bit short thus the strange look of the tang. However, as you can see, everything ended in a success. The whole process was full of ups and downs but Mariusz did not give up and bravely made it to the end. Well done and hope to see the rest of the shown blades finished!

Wow, all I can say is the OP did a damn fine job of it especially considering it was a first time effort. I hope the rest turn out just as well when finished. :tu

Wow-I think that is the most impressive series of posts I've seen on here in awhile. I love your workshop, and your attention to detail really shines through. Plus you're grinding Saito-style blades too?! A Saito is on my razor bucket list-I might pm you about one of yours.

I watched your grinding video. I have a couple suggestions. It will help if you grind the edge thickness to about 0.7mm before heat treatment. This leaves a lot less to remove when the steel is hard.

After heat treatment, slow your belt sander way down, and grind with the belt wet. This will preserve the temper of the steel.

Outstanding work! I too wish I had a shop like that, basement, garage shed or BEDROOM even. Very nice and impressive work. I have 2 attempts in the fail box. Hopefully the next will be a.success.

My first 20 failed. :)

Well, in fairness I have been on a quest to make one from an old file. Not the easiest thing since most are bordering on too thin already before grinding and the metal is not that easy to work with. The road less traveled so to speak but at least I know I have 18 more files to destroy.

Most of my first 20 were made from old files. Yes, they end up being to thin but it is good practice.
I did learn that belt speed was a critical consideration! I was grinding on a Wilton Square Wheel grinder with a 1750 rpm motor and a 10" drive wheel.:)

Did you ever get that razor to take a stable edge? The one you ground from a file at the meet?

I have not taken the time to buff off the residue from the salt pots yet.
Then I will hone and test shave with it . I also need to test shave that razor made by Andy Lewis from 1075 steel.
My energy is finally coming back so I can start working on necessary stuff.

Yeah, that Wilton grinder basically burned/destroyed every edge. There was no way to do a finish grind on it. It was because of that experience that I decided to build my No Weld Grinder. It was a good decision.

After a long break, welcome back again. I finished my second razor.
