I have a very rusty razor with inlaid celluloid scales. I just bought Evaporust after reading recommendations on the forum, but I'm not sure if it will harm the celluloid. Should I take the scales off before submerging the razor, or do you think they'll be okay?
The scales got to go. Never to be seen again. Pictures, the blade may not be worth saving, you would get good results from sanding or steel wool and wd40, some of that rot makes the edge not ever take a honing without crumbling
Sounds like cel rot. Post pictures to confirm whether it is or not.
Scales with cel rot can quickly contaminate an entire drawer full of metal, hence TC’s recommendation to get them as far away from your razor(s) as possible. Once the scales start to go, they have to be trashed.
If it is cel rot, your blade may already be toast.
