Put the effort and tenacity in it that you did into this project and it will progress well also. One big difference with honing is that there is a lot of muscle memory to it. It is similar to stropping in that the only way to get the hang of it and improve is to do it. Learning the technique by instruction isimportant but there is no way around the doing it part.
Generally the place a lot of us start is by refreshing a waning edge. It sounds backwards but in this case it is easier to learn top down instead of bottom up.
Yeah easier to touch up a blade that has been honed by someone that knows what they are doing to see how blade sits on the stone. I think my problem is keeping the the blade level and adding torque. Seems like I make a few passes and kill the edge when bevel setting
I am not particular to the color red either
