Looking for bits = ARRGGHH!!!

I just got back from searching for 1/16" brass or copper rods/wire/NAILS... you get the picture.

Nada-zip-nothing I even scoured the picture frame shops looking for brass nails that would be close, nothing...

At the moment I'm pounding my head on the table trying to think of anything I can take apart to make pivot pins and washers. I know I can get the washers on line but have not seen a source for the rod or tubing. Any of our regular rebuilders have a reliable source they would like to share :D

Try a hobby shop!
There is one near one of my customers that has a large supply of different sizes of brass rod!
This hobby shop specializes in model airplane and model cars that are motorized and remote controllable!

I have brass nails I got from a hardware store here, and I know you can get brass rod and tubing in the hardware store as well as nickel silver rods. Brass rods are used for welding I think, so ask the clerk to point you to the welding department.

My only dilemma is getting the inside washers for use between the scales and the blade. I have the ones from microfasteners.com, but I think their outside diameter is too small compared to the original ones used in vintage razors, thus requiring more force when pinning the razor, and not offering enough support on the scales when open...

I use to use brass nails (1/16" x 1") that I bought from Sears.

Any hobby shop (Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.) should have brass rod in the correct diameter. I even found some at a local hardware store. Look in the model section.

Michaels personal just looked at me funny when I asked for 1/16" brass rod. After walking arond the store for an hour I saw Nothing even close to what I could use...

I called a few local hobby shops as well, nothing... they now have them on order but that didn't help me on my day off. So today was a scrub for scale work.

I really want to get back to Anchorage AK. I could find anything I needed and it was in stock, I've had nothing but the run-around down here in the lower 48 ARRGGHH!!!

I'm sure you'd get them cheap enough from the bay of evil or perhaps asking some of the people you know on the knife forum might turn up a little.

I got 1/16th" brass rods (came as a 36" 2 pack) at Ace Hardware for $3.50 or so. Enough for all the razors I'll every re-scale :)

Did you get the microfasteners' washers in 00 wide and narrow? I thought the 00 wides were pretty similar to the stock stuff I have pulled out of my old scales. No?

Another vote for Ace. Their prices aren't always the greatest, but they always have all the rod you'll ever need. I find that Ace does better in the little things than the bigger stores do.

Of course, I'm in Oklahoma- hardware stores gotta carry everything for us bumpkins:rolleyes:

Kommifornica doesn't let anyone but the big $$ do what they want... Hard to find anything here (common sence?)... I can't wait to get the hell out of here again... My wife says I have to hang around, no moving to AK and getting everything ready... I can't even go there on vacation :p she knows I'll never come back :D

Sounds like my father in law. He's a mountain man and loves everything about the outdoors. He swears up and down that Alaska is one his favorite places on earth. I'm sure if he vacationed there now, he might never come back:roflmao

Yeah, I have used the 00's.

The washers I have removed from a Genco razor were more like ID 0.068" and OD 0.250", and the DD's are maybe a tad smaller in the outside diameter.

Currently, I am trying to find some washers on www.smallparts.com, and so far I have sourced some Nylon washers and Steel washers that fit my description. They are 0.025" thick, a bit thicker for a common razor, but actually, I prefer a little more clearance between the scales and the blade, to prevent the scratching of the freshly polished shank...

OK, appendix and end to my search.

In the www.smallparts.com catalog, I have been able to source the following washers, which are suitable for razor use, together with catalog part number:

I was thinking if the nylon washers are sturdy enough, they would be a help at cushining the blows while setting the pin, thus saving from impact scale cracks... Just a thought...

FWIW, (probably nothing) a lot of what's being called brass (basically copper and zinc) rod is more likely bronze (basically copper and tin). Brazing (bronze welding) used to be for casting repair.

I just returned from the largest population center in the state and didn't find any brass rod. . . just heaps of bronze.

Small brass nail like things almost a dead size match for the Dovo pins from Classicshave.com
Without going out to the shop to check the spelling (it's cold this mornin)
they are called Estruntion pins.
I used a torch to anneal them real quick, and tested them on some scrap scales I made for size patterns, they work well and with the #0 brass washers from Microfasteners.com I think they will look good too.....

Bought some stainless and brass rod at this site. http://www.knifeandgun.com/
They have a nickel silver section with 1/16" rod. I think I may have found some at a few muzzle loader builder sites.

The place I found 1/16" brass rod also had SS (choke) rods available. How do they compare to the brass when peening? Is it soft enough?

I've tried these pins, and I couldn't get them to peen without bending. Was your little torch treatment enough to soften them? Any other tips? I was excited to find them but so far haven't had any luck...
