Why not a restoration den???

Hi I have seen and loved looking at "Saving Dens" posted by many of you guys. I just like to see what other members have and I also like to look at razors (BST).
I was thinking why not show us your RESTORING DEN, in other word your work area with tools and blades and scales and pins and stones, and sandpaper and what so ever you use to restore those beautiful knives. You make almost magic restoring some of those razors so show us what you work with it might just give us NB clues on what we need to get started.

The ONLY things you NEED are what you have.

A dremel is OK for final polishing, and changing the tip style of a razor, but other than that you only need sandpaper (see my handsanding howto in this forum) and patience.

I currently still make scales only with files, sandpaper and a coping saw.
Currently I am working on bone inlays with nothing more than a dremel, files, sandpaper and an old straight razor blade.

Make do with what you have, and learn by making mistakes.
The nice thing is that manual work aloows you to really get to knwo the materials you're working with.

Looks nice.
I don't have a dedicated area atm.

Usually I sit on the couch, with whatever I need at the time in front of me.
That way I don't lock myself in the garage for the entire evening.

I am converting a big, iron frame into a heavy duty workbench in the basement. That way I have a place for a good drill press, a vise, a belt sander and coping saw.

Currently I have only the coping saw. I wait with the drill press until the bench is ready. The others are on my 'todo' list.
I have an agreement with my wife, that I can buy whatever I want for my razors, as long as I pay only with money I earn with razors.

This is a good way to keep the peace, and I wouldn't want it any other way, because we try to be frugal so that we can save something at the end of the month.

Well, after procrastinating about taking the photos, here is my Restoration Den. It was my girlfriend's dad's workbench really. He never uses it though, so I cleaned it up a little and set up shop. The drill press is out in the garage. :td

Nice! I like the small band saw and sander, does it do the work? I have limited space so it would be great, but I have been afraid those things would be too weak...

They work amazingly well for scales. Only thing is, you kind of have to learn where the sweet spots are. Especially with that kind of sander. Anything past 400 I hand sand anyway.

I know, you can't give up any trade secrets. Well, as long as you keep up the great work and continue posting that juicy razor porn, we can all be content wondering just how you do it! I hope I can snag one of your customs one day.

I never saw this thread in the past, so when I was out working in the shop I took a few pics....
Keep in mind most of the stuff I have does dual duty, just for razors you really don't need this bigger stuff... But heck what's wrong with "More Power" :w

The razors have managed to insinuate themselves inside the gun stuff quite well don't ya think???? :D

Wow Aaron- you are a confident man keeping your MacBook in there! Mine would have stopped working by now after everything that goes on at my bench! lol

My macbook was only sitting there because I was listening to Leo Laporte while cleaning up my work area. If I am working on something it does not go in the garage.

I have a couple different workshops. My space is multi purpose but mostly wood working although there is some welding stuff and a couple of reloading presses. The big gear is over at my dads place, table saw, another plainer, larger lathe, 6 inch belt sander, drill press, etc although a press and 6 inch belt sander are on my short list. I have a 1 inch strip/disk sander and a oscillating drum sander that I use for finish work. It is a bit messy right now. I just finished pinning another 6 blades yesterday and turned a bowl this evening and am putting in all new landscape timber in front of the house.

I still have the bowl chucked in the lathe while I put sealer and finish on it. I am still learning the lathe, especially the art of bowl turning but I think I am progressing along. Once you start down the lathe path there is no going back. Addictive, next thing you know you have gone from a basic 5 tool set a drawer full of lathe tools.
