New Idea??? Experimentation....

I still haven't had a problem with the scales, granted the scales are on older straights and are original therefore they aren't the prettiest things around but still I haven't done any damage to them.
Would I try this with a custom set of fancy scales, No, but then I wouldn't do any of this on a custom made razor.

And Midway carries a product called liquid sandpaper, you can "paint" it on a buffing wheel and let it dry and then use it to sand the razors. Great stuff, I used some on a stitched wheel and tried it last night.

So I got my package from midway today and immediately went to town. I am throwing this unknown Spanish point (beat-up edge) into the Walnut media first. The walnut I'm using is Frankford Arsenal's own media pre-treated with ammonia free brass polish. Here are the pics. I'll keep you posted!

P.S.- Experiment officially started 3/18/08 at 3 p.m. EST. I want to check on it every five minutes so badly, but will wait until tomorrow (maybe). lol

My order arrived today also and is sitting on my doorstep waiting for me :y

Unfortunately I still have 20 minutes left at work, then an hour and a half of gym time before I get to play.

The blade I'm throwing in there is in great shape to start with. I really only needs a finishing polish. I'm starting out conservative since I'm not used to this technique. I can always go back to walnut if I need to.

A few side notes as well..

-It is so hard to leave that tumbler alone. I keep wanting to check it every 15 minutes.

-I ended up buying a Thumler Tumbler from Cabela's instead of the Midway. It just looked sturdier to me, and the reviews I saw were pretty good (not that I don't appreciate yours, gssixgun :)). I don't know about the others, but this one is extremely quiet. I would probably rate it's noise level equivalent to a cell phone on vibrate. So far, so good. If I run into any problems with it I'll be sure to post.

LOL yeah the checking it every 15 minutes thing will drive ya to drink :D
I solved that problem by tossing it in late at night, then making sure the next day was a work day, so it got 12 hours at a time without me watching the pot....
We are going to learn at a very fast pace, with so many people trying this so quickly...
Keep the successes and the failures posted so we all know what's happing :)

So I broke down and checked it at almost 2 hours, and all I've got to say is WOW!

Parts of the blade are already starting to develop a great finish.

When are you going to give us that tip on making wood shiny? I think you referred to a gunsmith's trick for stocks?
