get rid of rust save the goldwash??

I recently came across a dubl duck golden edge razor that is in close to mint condition blade and scale wise. It also has the full goldwash still on the tang and monkey tail. The problem is, there are two patches of rust on the tang close to the scales. (I assume from being stored closed after shaving with it not fully dry)

I'm assuming if there is rust then the gold wash under those two small spots is gone, correct? What would be the ideal way to clean this up, get rid of all the wash or just clean up the rust spots and having missing wash in those spots?

Try removing the rust by hand to get an idea about the state of the gold wash.
raise a thick slurry on a fine grit hone like a coticule, and then use that slurry on a wet cloth to polish your blade.

It should be gentle on the gold wash and still able to remove the rust.
But if the rust is under the gold wash, then you'll wash away the wash :) because it doesn't have anything left to cling to.
