Bone Scales
I'm about to move a set of bone scales from a crap blade to a really nice blade with broken scales. The bone scales are looking rough, what can I do to clean em up? Can I sand them? Should I paint them? They are brown right now, but they look as if they might have been black and either faded or something.

Yes. Use a good wet sandpaper with water. Try first with 400. If this not work, take 240. Go up to the highest grit you can get.

If they are brown or black then I suspect they are buffalo horn.
Sand them with progressively finer grits, buff them, then rub in some neatsfoot oil, baby oil, olive oil or similar.

My poor razor has what are alleged to be bone scales.... kind of an offwhite color, with obvious grain lines. It needs to be cleaned.
What would you guys recommend? I don't want to try sanding, is there a prefered cleanser for bone?

Try a metal polish like MAAS.
