Hello gents.
They say there's a first time for everything and last night for the first time I cracked the scales of a razor I'm beginning to repair :rant:
As always, I filed down the pivot pin nearly to the surface of the scales. Until now, this is what it takes for me to remove the pivot pin by filing down the pin head. Once I filed one end of the pivot pin I did little effort to try to raise that handle half. Normally this is what it takes to removed the scales. Once I did this, and I must say it again, I haven't applied that much stress on the handles, the scales cracked on the pivot area.
The scales are bakelite, so I applied some super glue and put those pieces back together.
Now, being the crack in such a critical spot of the handles, will it take the stress I'll apply when I'll do the repinning? I'm a little skeptical on the super glue, because I'm afraid that that's not enough to give the strength needed to hold the newly peened pin, so did I ruined the scales for good?

Leon, if I am reading your post correctly, it reads that you popped the locking collar of one of the pins and then pried the scales upward to take the razor apart??????:shrug:
This is a 50-50 chance of breaking the scales, it works just fine until you run into one of two situations, a bent pin or a rusted pin either one will cause the scale to snap.... :rant:
Sometimes scales just snap no matter what you do right, taking vintage razor apart can be an evil wicked process :gth
As to fixing the broken scale, the only for sure ways I know of that actually will hold are, fiberglass cloth on the backside with resin, works better with light color scales.... Or making a brass liner for the scales and using epoxy to glue the scales and the liners together....
If however that super glue repair actually holds please tell us what brand of CA you were using :D
