Flap wheels
Is there anywhere that makes flap wheels with higher grits than 400? I have a big hole in my grit progression between 400 to 1500, which I hand sand and polish from. I would like to find at least one step in between those as it is nearly impossible to hand sand out 400grit scratches with 1500 paper.
Is there a better way without buying loads more equipment.
I have just come back to some more stubborn restorations that I gave up because of this problem and now I want to solve it!

flap discs, no. drums, yep!!!
you can check out my thread that i did on drum wheels here http://straightrazorpalace.com/galle...lap-discs.html
this is a take off of toxik's drums. i tried his way and had drums exploding on me. i make 600, 800, 1200, 1500, and 2000 discs. all labled and baggied. typically one to 2 disc will do each side at each grit on my razors. when i make them, i will usually make about 30-50 to hold me over for a while.
good luck and hope that this helps out.

Hand sand with a lowergrit than 1500?
Use 600, 800 and 1000 as well.
Or use a cheap homemade belt sander (Still have to upload pics of my 30$ cheapo)
Or use radial bristle discs of the preferred grits. I don't know where you can get them, but others might. I know Josh uses them.
Or use felt wheels on a dremel with polishing compound.
Or glue higher grit paper to the 400 grit flaps to make your own high grit flaphweel.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I was making drums at a higher grit for a while, but I got sick of them breaking after only a few strokes. I tried load of different ways to make them, but they still don't hold up for very long.
I made an attempt at a flap wheel but getting it to balance was a nightmare, and I can't bear hand sanding - my fingers are not made for it!
I already use polish on felt wheels but I use this after the 1500. Is there are compound that will sand at lower grits?
I am left with -
a home made belt sander(Oh yes I so want one)!
The radial bristles - I have heard of these but never seen them before and have no idea how well they perform.
I had a thought to wrap the outside of a flap wheel in sandpaper to make a much larger diameter sanding drum. I don't know if it would hold up any better than the smaller ones?
Thanks for the advice

Try loking in the restoration faq for a link, or do a workshop search for 'bristle'.
Several people used the bristle discs, and are pretty happy with them. JoshEarl was one who used them.
You could also use polishing compound which comes in different grits, and load a felt disc with that.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
