so i was just sitting here looking at SRP members beautiful custom straights and an idea popped into my head. Do you think it would me possible to make a straight into a butterfly type knife but still be able to maneuver it and still have the monkey tail and everything?
just though it would be a cool looking thing though bulky and out of balance most likely :jedi:
While I think it might be possible, I would not want to flip that thing around. That just seems like a way to lose a finger or some serious cuts, st8s are WAY to sharp and usually too thin (fragile) to use for a knife.IMHO

You wouldn't cut yourself due to the same factors that prevent a butterfly knife from cutting you. When holding the proper handle, only the back of the blade (spine side) can hit your hand. You can tell which side to hold it by based on which side the clasp-thingy (yea, that's the technical term; you didn't know?) is on.Quote:

I think you would definitely kill the blade though if doing the typical "fancy" balisong moves, essentially the blade is hitting the inside of the edge side handles when you're spinning it and flipping it and doing all the things that make it fun.
balisongs are the bomb though when it comes to knives for fighting, it is the ONLY way to have a folding knife that you can truly depend on not shutting on your hand. And for any of you that do like them and notice that always you see them with the two "tabs" at the handle to tang attachment, that's completely unnecessary. I had one from the Philippines my dad got there in the mid-80's, supposed to have originated in the P.I. there were no tabs or other protrusions at the base of the blade for the handles.

I saw it on a vintage travel razor....
The two sided scales folded and protected the blade and of course when open became the handle for shaving... I didn't pay enough attention to it to say how it was designed, but the first thought though my head was OOOOooo a Butterfly razor !!!!!!
And Alex is right it didn't look all that great, sorta boxy looking....
Of course it could be done. I wouldn't use a vintage straiight though. There are plenty of inexpensive straight razor type knives on Ebay: straight razor knife, Collectibles, Health Beauty items on eBay.com
That you can pick up for under $10 and experiment with. The handles each do require their own pivot but there is no reason they couldn't be in line longitudinally as opposed to the standard side by side arrangement. Also you don't have to have the spine enclosed at all. The edge can fold into one handle and the other handle can be such that it merely presses the spine toward the edge.
