    Unhappy First restore, tang uneven.

I cleaned up the blade, cut out the scales, put in the adjustable pins to check everything out and it does not close properly. It didn't close right when I got it, but I figured it was the scales that were warped. After inspecting things, Ive identified the problem. You can see from the pictures below that when you lay the razor on a flat surface, the tang is flush on one side, but far from it on the other. Stacking a few washers on the uneven side helps a good deal, but looks like poop. Is there any way to salvage this guy?

I have compensated for misshapen tangs by providing relief on the inside surfaces of the scales where the tang touches. A little bit of work with and emery board down near the pin makes quite a difference over the length of the blade.

i did the multiple washer thing. just depends on the razor. sometimes you just have to be off center either on the toe or heel.

Okay being a newb at restoration but quite experienced with japanese swords I have to ask. Why can't the razor be bent back to striaght? In the dojo new students cutting tatame for the first time often bend their swords and as long as they are not bent at to much of an acute angle they can be bent back straight with little ill effect.

Just curious so when I receive one in similiar condition I don't go directly to the straightening route if thats bad voodoo.

    TIA

    Good question
Katana are a different animal & a springier temper than str8's.
Most str8 blades would be too brittle to straighten without breaking but I don't know if the tang or monkey tail is any softer.

Cool! I am glad it worked for you. I end up fine tuning the centering on most of my wooden scales this way.
