This is just the proto-type so please be nice, it is not finished. Had to order the mirror so it is not installed yet. Dividers will be put in to hold mug and brush and thinking about putting a tray in to hold razors? Your comments and suggestions are welcome. Size OD demensions 7.5"W X 8" L X 5.5" H

Prototype looks good. A razor tray, or the vertical compartments would be sensible. What's the real thing going to be made from? You could take that one, line it with baize or felt, cover it with leather & it'd be awesome!
I like the hinged top! I think it looks good but on the finished product you might want to cut the ends at a 45 degree so you don't have the butt end of a board showing. That way where two boards meet is right on the corner and it will give a more finished look IMO. You might want to add in a little compartment for a desiccant pouch like DampRid. That way if you put a razor away slightly damp it will help to soak up the moisture.
I think it's a very sturdy, nice looking box. I was curious about the double hinged top.... it's adds a bit to it, very neat.

I'd definitely add some separation between the stuff in the box, but it looks nice!

Thanks so much for taking the initiative to get this project started. Very impressive work on the fly. I think the prototype is coming along nicely.
I agree that some kind of separation would be nice - I like the idea of leaving the exterior/mirror frame of the box unfinished so that we can stain/decorate it ourselves, but there might be something to doing some kind of lining to the inside - though I realize this would be labor-intensive if done in a way that wouldn't show the installation too much.
Another thought on the separation - I think ideally about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bottom of the box would be divided - to me, most attractive/functional option would be a "pull out" drawer into which you could place razor dividers with room for say, 3-5 razors. Set over the drawer you'd have a small "shelf,"perhaps with a divider down the middle.
I think you want to elongate the box just a bot more, so it's slightly more rectangular than square in shape, leaving room under the lid for a slightly longer mirror and room in the box for mug, brush, strop, hone, etc. as needed. Keep up the great work! Martin

I love the way the lid allows the mirror to be angled for the shave. That's a great idea. Personally i'd have installed some individual slots for the razors, as in Tony Millers boxes that he sold. Apart from that it looks like a great job though!

Nice for a prototype. I think that a piano hinge where the lid meets up with the box would be a good substitution for the two hinges you have in there now. I would also recommend that the silver screws used to hold the mirror (I think that is what they are for) be replaced/removed. The silver looks out of place right now with all the brass/gold that you have.
Other than that, it is a great idea, and looks good. :tu
Very ingenious design. Let me see if I understand it: the mirror is fastened into the hinged front part of the lid, yes? so you can open the whole lid flat, take out your supplies, and then swing the mirror down for use? And the compartments would be mug on the right, brush on the left, razor(s) in front, right? So, two questions: what wood did you use, and are you thinking of selling these?

You are right on the functions of the box. This one was made out of pine, top and bottom pannels are birch plywood. Out side was stained with walnut then the whole thing was given a couple coats of wipe on poly. Sorry for the silver colored screws, but I did not have any brass ones on hand. Going to change that part of the design with a different type of frame for the mirror. Just have to find the hard ware I want. I want it to be removeble just in case it would get broken. I want to finally post some pictures of the boxes you sent me now that I have them finished. I look forward to doing more! I stained with natural oak stain, finished with Tru Oil. Yes, I did manage to put enough coats to fill the engraving completely. I added two little luxuries. I added little magnets for keeping the lid closed and I put feet on the bottom.

Old Blades, did you make that second box? You have some talent for carpentry.
My dad in his retirement, has taken to woodworking and is looking for projects.
So i gave him one and drew up some plans Inspired by Oldblades' barbers box , and worked on it with him.
Its made of cedar reclaimed from some old window frames or something.
the timber was put through a thicknesser and dressed up like new.
Unfortunately i couldn't find brass lockable latch.
Apart from that, all fittings are brass or brass coloured.
I took the pics on my phone a few minutes ago so i hope there's enough datail for you to see.

The outside was given just a light cover of Danish Oil and the interior was left as raw Cedar , smells great and absorbs humidity/moisture away from blades.
Also blades kept in their individual boxes for the same reason ,as well as protection against possible impact damage against anything else as they're a snug fit.

postage from Australia is probably a bit expensive for an item that size.
It was really just intended as a one off piece for my own use,
but if you wanted one identical, it'd probably be cheaper to get someone local to make you one to the same specs.
...or three and sell two to pay for your one :).
I could measure it up, draw some plans and post that if you want.
