Liquid Silver Plating???

:shrug:Okay Guys, I am starting to restore razors and I'm looking through the internet at a site someone recommended, Metalliferous.com, and I saw this product Liquid Silver plating. This stuff is supposed to deposit silver plating onto metal without the use of electricity.I have a few questions. Can it be used on a straight razor and/or has anyone ever tried it? Metalliferous | Metals, Tools, Beads, Supplies for Jewelry-making Here's the link if anyone wants to look at it. Hope someone has had experience with it. I'm curious that if you put this on the steel of a straight razor, with honing, will it peel, or actually be molecularly bonded with the metal? Take care all and God Bless! Ray

I don't know about "electroless" plating, but I think that if you tried to electroplate silver onto steel it wouldn't take - you generally have to flash-coat steel with copper for the silver to molecularly bond.

That's my understanding as well, either gold or silver plating requires a base coat of copper first. Back in the day I had a small electroplating setup for guns and while gold would bond to bare steel it didn't stick for long. A copper wash first made all the difference with gold or silver.

I think what that will provide you with is like a silver or gold wash which is extremely thin and very nondurable. Its designed for jewelry makers so their new products look good in the display box and wears off in the blink of an eye.
