I should have thought to take some "before" pics before I started sanding the blade...

This is a 6/8, very hollow, Genco "Forge Mark" I just got off ebay. I was originally intending to clean it up and sell it to help fund some HAD, but it's just too cool. So I'm keeping it. Here's some in-process pics.

I still haven't figured out how much I want to clean up the tang area with the hammer tracks, and the blade is about halfway through the 600-grit cycle, heading for 1000 and then some polishing. The scales appear to be after-market, but they're in good shape so they'll last for a while...

I love those hammered Tangs too....

That one looks to be in great shape edge and spine wise...

Don’t sand the hammer marks... what looks like rust or patina is black oxide (or bluing) that’s how it is supposed to look.
And I could be wrong, but I don’t believe those scales are aftermarket… regardless of the pinning where there is no lock washer.

Congrats man… she is a beautiful razor, hone her up and let us know how she shaves.

I had just gotten her all polished up, and giving a few touch up passes in a fish-hook groove in my diamond stone I use for my knives, and a burr in the blade caught. I'm now going to have to take a good solid 1/8th off the blade... :rant::gaah:

How were you touching up with a hook groove? That's a new one for me:thinking:

I'm trying to imagine how you'd use a fish hook groove with a straight razor... I assume it was a powered wheel?

(lol, if it's out towards the toe, I can shorten the blade for you :). I'm getting some experience doing that)

How about if you just extend the bottom line of the tang in through the shoulder with a nice curve down to the edge just past the chip? See Glen's latest creation.

All is not lost... she is still salvageable... and may turn out to be a great shaver.

Well, did some grinding, and some bread-knifing, and she's back. A little more polishing and I'll be ready to set the bevel and go...

For those who asked/were puzzled, that groove in the stone shown in the chip picture is the fish-hook groove. I use it sometimes to bread-knife the edge to remove burrs from sanding, as it is nice and flat, and doesn't leave a 100% flat edge. This particular burr however, was averse to that idea...

Also, I get it about the hook groove. I thought you meant that you were doing touch up on honed edge.

Yea, nice recovery! You think maybe the blade was cracked already for that to happen by hand?

I wouldn't be surprised, but if so it was a darn small crack, or maybe an internal flaw of some sort, because it wasn't visible while I was sanding & polishing...
